The latest in car news and reviews, without the fluff.

Typically, we focus on cars and trucks here, but this article takes a different direction. Instead, we introduce Frank, a passionate builder and collector who has a deep appreciation for Cub Cadet machinery. His dedication is evident as he has custom-built an entire fleet of scaled, fully operational equipment. Now, he boasts a garden tractor-sized bulldozer, a sit-on road grader, a miniature articulating dump truck, and more, all contributing to a well-maintained property.

Many videos featured on the Wood and Metal Shop Time YouTube channel capture the construction of these machines. You could easily spend hours immersed in them, and while you watch, you can pick up some tips on creating lumber racks or using stump grinders. It’s a beneficial experience all around.

Seeing Frank's creations lined up in the driveway is pretty impressive. While it's hard to pick a favorite, the bulldozer stands out as a testament to his creativity. He outfitted it with two modified Cub Cadet transmissions—one at the front and another at the back—both adjusted to operate at the same speed in both directions. This setup allows him to maneuver the vehicle in tight spots. The six-way blade in front also enables it to push dirt to the right or left.

Another recent project from Frank is the 4×4 articulating dump truck. Although it appears to be factory-made, it demanded significant innovation, including reversing the engine and transmission as well as fitting a rear axle at the front for traction. The two halves are joined by a universal joint in the center, allowing for flexibility. This design isn’t the first attempt; Frank had initially tried a CV joint that didn’t yield the desired results. He humbly admits that others have crafted similar machines, but his may be unique for featuring a hydraulically operated steel bed.

“I did take a couple of functioning machines, specifically tractors, and repurpose them. But nothing rare or out of the ordinary in the Cub Cadet lineup,” Frank reassures his audience. “Most of the tractors used here were on their way to the scrap yard.”

      What a relief!

I truly appreciate the elaborate work that has been accomplished here. As someone who shares a passion for vintage machinery and understands the struggle of knowing when to stop, I have a great admiration for individuals who refine and adapt tools to meet their needs. While not everyone might need a small dozer, grader, or forklift—I get that—but if you do? Well, you can build it, as Frank clearly demonstrates.

Much respect, sir. This is some remarkable DIY craftsmanship.
