You may have heard the adage that all publicity is good publicity. While I’m not certain about its accuracy, I think it applies in this scenario. Ram is recalling over 12,000 trucks because they are simply too fast. To clarify, their top speed limiters were incorrectly configured, enabling them to exceed the maximum speed rating of their tires.
The reasoning may make it sound less impressive, but nevertheless. Ram estimates that around 12,736 2500 HD pickups manufactured between June 21, 2022, and April 14, 2026, have this flaw. All of these trucks have R-rated tires from the factory, which correspond to a limit of 106 miles per hour. Typically, Ram restricts its HD trucks to 105 mph to remain within this limit, though it is unclear just how much higher the speed limit is set for these recalled vehicles.
The solution is quite straightforward. Owners need to visit their dealer for a software update for the Powertrain Control Module.
RCLRPT-26V288-5555 Importantly, Ram has no knowledge of any accidents or injuries connected to this problem. It's fortunate that most 16-year-olds cannot afford a new Cummins-powered truck; if they could, there’s a strong possibility they'd be testing that tire rating right now. Legally, you can't drive at triple-digit speeds on U.S. roads anyway, so as long as drivers adhere to road safety, no one should have to discover what occurs when reaching 107 mph or higher.
It's still uncertain whether the recall impacts Ram HDs with the Cummins diesel, the Hemi gas V8, or both. Owners should check for themselves by entering their VIN on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s website. Regardless, Ram will inform dealers of the recall around May 14, and owners can expect to receive some form of notification by June 4.
