Alex Palou has once again secured pole position at the Indy 500.

Alex Palou has once again secured pole position at the Indy 500.

Alex Palou won the Indy 500 a year ago and in 2026 will try to repeat that success, starting from the most favorable position: the Spanish driver of Chip Ganassi Racing won the qualification at the famous oval racetrack in Indianapolis.

On May 24, the Indy 500 will take place for the 110th time, and the four-time IndyCar champion will start the classic race from pole – for this achievement, he is entitled to a cash prize of $100,000.

The final qualification featured the six fastest drivers, and in the decisive attempt, Palou completed four fast laps with an average speed of 232.248 mph – that's almost 374 km/h. In the Indy 500, the result is determined not by time, but by the average speed shown in a series of four fast laps.

"I have no words," Alex commented while accepting congratulations. "Overall, it was something incredible! You see our wild joy – it's because when we woke up in the morning, we didn't expect to show such speed."

For Alex Palou, this is already his second similar achievement: in 2023, he also started the Indy 500 from pole.

The second-best result was shown by Alex Rossi, who won this race in 2016, and this will be his best starting position in all 11 times he has started in Indianapolis. This season, the former Formula 1 driver is competing in IndyCar for Ed Carpenter Racing.

Joining Palou and Rossi in the front row will be David Malukas, a rookie from Team Penske, and this is also his best qualifying achievement in his career.

The best of the European drivers competing in IndyCar was Swedish driver Felix Rosenqvist, who achieved the fourth-best result driving for Meyer Shank Racing. Next to his Dallara-Chevrolet from the second row, Santino Ferrucci (A.J. Foyt) will start in the Indy 500, while the sixth-best is Pato O'Ward, a driver for Arrow McLaren.

As for other former Formula 1 drivers, Japanese veteran Takuma Sato will start from the 12th position, Marcus Ericsson from the 17th, Romain Grosjean from the 25th, and Mick Schumacher from a distant 27th.
