Asphalt has been laid in Madrid as Sainz unveils the tunnel sections.

"Something that is very challenging for me to articulate"

Carlos Sainz has taken his first laps at Formula 1’s new Madrid circuit, where the impressive banked turns and motorway tunnels appear to be key characteristics of the 2026 SP venue. Amid ongoing concerns about construction delays and the readiness of the 'Madring' project, the initial full asphalt layer has been completed around the IFEMA exhibition complex in the Spanish capital.

Driving a 450bhp Ford Mustang instead of his usual Williams, Sainz has become the first F1 driver to navigate the new 5.4km semi-street circuit. "It’s something very challenging for me to articulate," Sainz remarked. "I've always dreamed of the chance to race in my hometown. Madrid is an incredible city, and having this Formula 1 track here will be amazing."

According to Auto Motor und Sport, the circuit includes tight city-style sections along with smooth, high-speed curves that are reminiscent of classic permanent racetracks. One notable aspect is the two tunnels that pass beneath Madrid’s motorway system. However, the main highlight is the expansive banked Turn 12 section, called La Monumental. "Sustained for almost half a kilometre," Sainz explained regarding the 24-degree banking. "This will facilitate side-by-side racing, particularly for getting out of the dirty air. Go high, go low."

"And right at the end, as you can see, it inclines and then descends. So it's not just a bank, it’s also a sort of undulating banking. I believe this is going to be epic."

"There will be grandstands on both the left and right. I don't think you find that in many places." Sainz is also optimistic that the unusually broad layout will enhance overtaking opportunities, even with the semi-street nature of the circuit. "The wide track will assist us in overtaking more effectively," he anticipated. "That’s not typically the case on street circuits."
