Asphalt laid in Madrid as Sainz uncovers tunnel segments.

"Something that is very hard for me to describe"

Carlos Sainz has taken his first laps on Formula 1’s new circuit in Madrid, with the layout’s striking banking and motorway tunnels becoming notable features of the 2026 SP venue. Amid ongoing speculation regarding construction delays and whether the 'Madring' project would be completed on time, the initial full asphalt layer has been laid around the IFEMA exhibition complex in the Spanish capital.

Driving a 450bhp Ford Mustang instead of his usual Williams, local favorite Sainz made history as the first F1 driver to navigate the new 5.4km semi-street circuit. "It’s something very hard for me to describe," Sainz remarked. "I have always dreamed of the chance to race in my hometown. Madrid is a fantastic city, and having this Formula 1 track will be incredible."

As reported by Auto Motor und Sport, the circuit features tight city-style sections along with smooth, high-speed corners that are reminiscent of traditional permanent tracks. A standout aspect is the dual tunnels that run beneath Madrid’s motorway system.

However, the primary highlight is the steeply banked Turn 12 section known as La Monumental. "Sustained for almost half a kilometer," Sainz noted of the 24-degree banking. "This will enable side-by-side racing, especially to escape the dirty air. You can go high, or go low." "And right at the end, as you can see, it goes up and then down. So it’s not just banking; it also features an elevation change. I think this will be epic."

"There will be grandstands on both sides. You don’t often see that in many places." Sainz also believes that the unusually wide design of the track will facilitate overtaking, despite its semi-street layout. "The wide track will enhance our overtaking opportunities," he predicted. "That's usually not the case on street circuits."
