Affalterbach has unveiled its latest innovation, the 2027 Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe, which boasts an impressive 1,153 horsepower thanks to its tri-motor configuration. This concept-like high-performance electric vehicle employs Formula 1-inspired battery technology and pushes the limits of what a luxury car can achieve while remaining street-legal. It's no wonder that the head of AMG asserts that, irrespective of the type of propulsion, the essence of the brand lies in performance and emotion, indicating that the horsepower battle is far from finished.
During a recent exclusive preview of the GT 4-Door Coupe at the brand's showroom in Hamburg, Mercedes-AMG CEO Michael Schiebe engaged with select media regarding AMG's role in the ongoing horsepower and acceleration contest, particularly considering the emergence of high-performance electric vehicles from China.
When asked if the horsepower wars had concluded, Schiebe replied, “I don’t think so. Over the past few years, and especially now with the shift to electric, we can discuss extraordinary levels of performance and horsepower. The figures we’re presenting [in the new AMG GT 4-Door Coupe] speak for themselves.”
He further remarked, “I believe that future acceleration metrics, like 0-60 times, will become less distinct since many electric vehicles will have rapid acceleration capabilities. This is where the AMG.EA [Electric Architecture] operates on an entirely different level, as our V8 mode and simulated gear shifts offer a complete 360-degree experience that encompasses driving dynamics and design, along with the need for technology to manage such power.”
Currently, the most potent combustion vehicle in the AMG lineup is the SL63 S E Performance Roadster, which produces 805 hp. Its twin-turbocharged electrified V8 engine is featured across the AMG range, with its closest rival in terms of power being the S63 E Performance sedan at 791 hp. Clearly, even at that level, traditional gas-powered AMGs are quite far from the astounding 1,153 hp of the new GT 4-Door Coupe.
However, Schiebe noted that power figures and acceleration aren't the sole focus. The driving experience must be enjoyable, supported by the right tools, given that such power requires appropriate software to be effectively harnessed.
“Technologies like the AMG Race Engineer ensure that you can genuinely translate this power and performance onto the road, so I do not anticipate a decrease [in horsepower], though I’ve noticed discussions in China regarding the appropriate acceleration speeds of vehicles. We’ll see what unfolds,” he added.
“I believe that in the near future, we will continue to improve in the performance sector. This implies achieving greater performance, potentially lighter vehicles, enhanced technology, and superior driving dynamics. We are committed to excelling in this arena and aim to lead,” Schiebe stated.
