Affalterbach has unveiled its latest model, the 2027 Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe, which boasts an impressive 1,153 horsepower from its tri-motor configuration. This performance electric vehicle, resembling a concept car, utilizes battery technology derived from Formula 1 and redefines the expectations of a street-legal luxury vehicle. It’s perhaps not surprising that the head of AMG notes that, regardless of the type of propulsion, performance and emotion are fundamental to the brand, and the competition for horsepower is far from finished.
In a recent exclusive look at the GT 4-Door Coupe held at the brand's showroom in Hamburg, Mercedes-AMG CEO Michael Schiebe shared insights with selected media about AMG’s involvement in the ongoing horsepower and acceleration competition, particularly amidst the rise of high-performance electric vehicles from China.
When asked if he thought the horsepower wars had concluded, Schiebe responded, “I don’t think so. Over the past few years, especially with the advent of the electric era, we can discuss fantastic performance and horsepower levels. You’ve already seen the power we’re referring to in the new AMG GT 4-Door Coupe.
“I believe that in the future, acceleration, such as 0-60 mph times, will become less distinctive, as many electric vehicles will be capable of rapid acceleration. This is where the AMG.EA [Electric Architecture] comes into play at a completely different level, as it offers a full 360-degree experience incorporating driving dynamics, design, and the necessary technology to handle such power,” he elaborated.
At present, the most powerful combustion engine AMG is the SL63 S E Performance Roadster, which generates 805 hp. Its twin-turbocharged electrified V8 engine is used throughout the AMG range, with the S63 E Performance sedan being its closest counterpart in terms of power, producing 791 hp. Clearly, even at that output, the gasoline-powered AMGs are significantly behind the new GT 4-Door Coupe’s 1,153 horsepower.
However, Schiebe emphasized that the conversation isn’t solely focused on power output or 0-60 times. It is essential for everything to deliver an enjoyable driving experience with the appropriate tools, and with such high power levels, suitable software is necessary to utilize it correctly and effectively.
“Technologies like the AMG Race Engineer ensure that you can truly harness this power and performance on the road, so I don’t anticipate a decrease in horsepower. I acknowledge that there have been discussions in China regarding how quickly cars can or should accelerate. We’ll see how it all unfolds,” he stated.
“In the near future, I expect us to continually improve in the performance sector. This means achieving greater performance, perhaps producing lighter vehicles, enhancing technology, and refining driving dynamics. We are fully engaged in this competition, and we aim to lead it,” Schiebe concluded.
