Antonelli claims that his F1 competitors now hold him in higher regard during his pursuit of the championship.

"The season is still long, we know that."

Kimi Antonelli believes his competitors now perceive him differently following his impressive start to the 2026 season. The 19-year-old Mercedes driver, who is leading the world championship after winning four of the first five races, received the esteemed Lorenzo Bandini Trophy in Brisighella on Friday. A large crowd gathered in the small Italian town to celebrate the championship leader.

"There are so many people here for me - I didn’t expect such a reception," he expressed joyfully. "Reflecting on the names that have received this before me, such as Schumacher and Hamilton, makes it even more emotional."

Despite holding a 43-point lead in the championship, Antonelli emphasized that it is too early to celebrate. "The season is still long, we know that," he stated. "I’m pleased because the team is performing excellently, and I want to repay their hard work by giving my all."

The Italian also spoke about the escalating rivalry with teammate George Russell, which intensified during the Canadian GP weekend. "Competing with Russell throughout the season will be challenging, but we want to avoid contentious clashes that could jeopardize the team," Antonelli remarked. "I spoke with Toto Wolff about the conflict between Hamilton and Rosberg in 2016. He shared both the positives and negatives, highlighting what we must avoid, as the team must come first."

Antonelli acknowledged that his performances have shifted how rivals regard him. "I know they look at me with respect now because I’ve demonstrated my capabilities," he noted. "I aim to send a clear message because I want to remain at the forefront - that’s the objective."

The Mercedes driver also dismissed claims that his success has altered his character. "I am exactly as you see me, and I don’t wish to change that," he said. "Obviously, the dynamics on the track are entirely different. The angelic side is only visible off the track. F1 is a fiercely competitive environment - you either dominate or get dominated."

Antonelli revealed he has forged a friendship with Max Verstappen outside of racing. "We discuss GT, F1, as well as our personal lives," he shared. "Ultimately, outside the paddock, we’re just regular guys."

When asked about Ferrari, with many in Italy hoping to see him in red someday, Antonelli responded, "But right now, I’m a Mercedes driver, and I’m extremely happy here." He continued, "The team provided me with immense opportunities as a young driver, supported me throughout my journey, and I feel a responsibility to give my all for them."

"I owe it to the team and wish to win as much as possible with Mercedes. I've communicated with the team, and they want to keep working with me beyond next year, not just in 2026. However, to secure that, I need to perform well. They likely plan to continue with me after 2026, but I need to deliver results on my end. Then we’ll determine what the future holds."
