Kimi Antonelli states that his competitors now perceive him differently following his impressive start to the 2026 season. The 19-year-old Mercedes driver, who is comfortably leading the world championship with four victories out of the first five races, received the esteemed Lorenzo Bandini Trophy in Brisighella on Friday.

A large crowd gathered in the quaint Italian town to celebrate the championship leader. "There are so many people here for me - I wasn’t expecting such a turnout," he expressed joyfully. "Reflecting on the names who have received this before me, such as Schumacher and Hamilton, adds to the emotion."

Although he holds a 43-point lead in the championship, Antonelli emphasized that it's too early to become complacent. "The season is still long, we know that," he stated. "I’m pleased because the team is performing excellently, and I wish to repay their hard work by giving my all."

The Italian also spoke about the increasing competition with teammate George Russell, which intensified during the Canadian GP weekend. "The rivalry with Russell throughout the season will be challenging, but we want to avoid intense conflicts that could put the team in jeopardy," Antonelli mentioned. "I had a conversation with Toto Wolff regarding the rivalry between Hamilton and Rosberg in 2016. He shared both the positives and negatives, emphasizing the behaviors we must avoid since the team is the priority."

Antonelli acknowledged that his performances have altered how his rivals perceive him. "I know they now look at me with respect because I’ve demonstrated my capabilities," he remarked. "I aim to send a clear message because I intend to stay at the front - that’s the objective."

The Mercedes driver also dismissed claims that his achievements have modified his character. "I am just as you see me, and I do not wish to change that," he commented. "Of course, things on the track are quite different."

"The angelic side is only visible off the track because F1 is a shark tank - you either consume or be consumed." Antonelli also shared that he has fostered a friendship with Max Verstappen outside of the races, stating, "We discuss GT, F1, and also our personal lives."

"Ultimately, outside the paddock, we’re just regular guys." Antonelli was also inquired about Ferrari, as many in his home country hope to see him in red one day. "But at this moment, I’m a Mercedes driver and I’m extremely happy here," Antonelli responded. "The team provided me with a significant opportunity as a young driver, supported me throughout my entire journey, and I feel a responsibility to give my all for them."

"I owe it to the team and want to achieve as much as possible with Mercedes. I have spoken with the team, and they wish to continue working with me in the future - not just next year. However, for that to occur, I need to perform effectively.

"They likely plan to keep working with me beyond 2026, but I must deliver results on my part. Then we’ll see."
