Hulkenberg advised to remain patient with Audi F1.
"Nico is very easy to collaborate with."
Nico Hulkenberg has been advised to maintain his confidence in Audi, despite the challenging start to the 2026 season for the German manufacturer. The Audi works team has only managed to secure two points in their initial races under Sauber's full control, both of which were earned by rookie Gabriel Bortoleto, while the seasoned Hulkenberg has yet to score. As speculation regarding the 38-year-old's future intensifies, former Formula 1 driver Christian Danner believes that leaving would be unwise.
"While he could be replaced, it’s important to recognize that the team is still capable of achieving a successful weekend," Danner stated to motorsport-magazin.com. "Audi is facing numerous minor issues, and the list continues to grow. The team has declared its commitment to ongoing improvement, yet there are currently no indications of that."
Danner noted that the current qualifying positions for Audi rely more on mistakes from competitors than on their own performance. However, he remains optimistic about the project's potential for success. "Audi should not be dismissed," he remarked. "It’s a solid team with capable individuals, and it can reach a higher level."
"Therefore, I would strongly advise Nico Hulkenberg to stay with the team and remain dedicated to this project." Hulkenberg's existing contract is set to expire at the end of 2026, although it reportedly includes an option for an additional season. Audi chief Mattia Binotto also sought to assuage speculation as the driver market heats up.
"Discussing drivers is the easiest task, and I am very pleased with our two current drivers," he said. "One is a highly experienced driver, while the other is quite young." Binotto particularly commended Hulkenberg.
"Nico is very easy to work with," he stated. "He is always sincere, transparent, and enjoyable to be around. There’s no politics involved, and ultimately, he loves driving."
"He is consistent, possesses experience, and understands how to maximize the car's potential." The former Ferrari team principal also dismissed rumors that Hulkenberg might be nearing retirement. "Nico is 38, but I don’t believe he is contemplating retirement," Binotto commented. "Age certainly factors in since it’s a physically demanding sport, but experience is equally significant."
"Fernando (Alonso) serves as an example, and Nico still has several seasons ahead of him." Binotto was also asked about Carlos Sainz, who had been Audi’s top target during the 2024 driver market before the Spaniard chose Williams.
"Clearly, we had a good rapport at Ferrari, and I have the same level of trust in him now," Binotto remarked. "It's always beneficial to communicate with him and explore options, but I have immense respect for everyone’s choices."
"If he opted for a different path, I wish him well. He made his own decision, which is what truly matters, and on the other hand, we had the opportunity with Gabriel, and I am very pleased."
