Hulkenberg urged to remain patient with Audi F1.
"Nico is very easy to collaborate with."
Nico Hulkenberg has been encouraged not to lose hope in Audi, even with the German manufacturer's challenging start to the 2026 season. The Audi works team has managed to secure only two points in its initial races since fully taking over Sauber, both courtesy of rookie Gabriel Bortoleto, while the seasoned Hulkenberg has yet to score. With rumors already circulating regarding the 38-year-old’s future, former Formula 1 driver Christian Danner believes that leaving the team would be a misstep.
"On one side, he might be replaced, but on the other hand, the team is still very capable of having a successful weekend," Danner told motorsport-magazin.com. "Audi is facing numerous minor issues. The list is extensive and continues to grow. While the team claims a commitment to ongoing improvement, there are currently no indications of that."
Danner mentioned that Audi’s qualifying positions are presently more reliant on competitors’ mistakes than on their own performance. Nevertheless, he remains optimistic about the project's potential for success.
"Audi shouldn’t be dismissed," he stated. "It's a good team with skilled individuals, and it can achieve a higher standard." He continued by advising Nico Hulkenberg to remain with the team and stay dedicated to the project.
Hulkenberg's existing contract is set to conclude at the end of 2026, though it is said to include an option for an additional year. Audi's chief Mattia Binotto also sought to dispel rumors as the driver market begins to heat up.
"Discussing the drivers is the easiest part, and I’m very pleased with the two we currently have," he remarked. "One is quite experienced, while the other is very young." Binotto expressed particular admiration for Hulkenberg.
"Nico is very easy to cooperate with," he commented. "He is consistently sincere, transparent, and enjoyable to work with. There are no politics at play, and ultimately, he loves driving."
"He’s reliable, experienced, and knows how to maximize the car's potential." The former Ferrari team principal also dismissed any suggestions that Hulkenberg might be on the verge of retirement.
"Nico is 38, but I doubt he’s contemplating retirement," Binotto stated. "While age is a factor since it’s a physically demanding sport, experience also holds significant value." "Fernando (Alonso) serves as an example, and Nico has many seasons ahead of him."
Binotto was also questioned about Carlos Sainz, who had been Audi’s primary target during the 2024 driver market before choosing Williams.
"Naturally, we had a strong relationship at Ferrari, and I trust him just as much now," Binotto said. "It’s always beneficial to converse with him and consider options, but I respect everyone’s decisions."
"If he decided to pursue a different path, I am pleased for him. He made his own choice, which is what truly matters, and in the meantime, we had the opportunity with Gabriel, which I am very satisfied with."
