Sainz looks towards competing into his 40s as speculation about his future persists.
"I foresee a lengthy career"
Carlos Sainz has expressed his desire to keep racing until at least the age of 40, amid ongoing speculation about his future in Formula 1. The 31-year-old Spaniard will be out of contract with Williams at the end of the season. Team principal James Vowles has indicated his wish to retain both Sainz and Alex Albon, but Audi remains a contender after previously attempting to sign him ahead of the 2025 season. Audi chief Mattia Binotto acknowledged just days ago that conversations had occurred.
"We had a strong relationship at Ferrari," Binotto stated. "I hired him at Ferrari, which shows I trusted him then as much as I do now. He considered his options, but honestly, I believe he made his own decision, and that was essential. I would even say it was his choice and not one dictated by his father, which is wonderful for him."
In an interview with Spanish-language Vanity Fair, Sainz indicated that retirement is still far off. "I foresee a lengthy career," he remarked. "I would like to race from at least 31 to 40 years old, whether it be in Formula 1 or another category. After that, I'll evaluate my personal and family situation and decide if I want to continue racing or shift to a different role in the sport."
Now one of the most seasoned drivers on the grid after 12 seasons in Formula 1, the Spaniard acknowledged that the lifestyle allows little free time outside of racing. "The time I have to do what I want is probably about 20 or 30 days a year," Sainz noted. "Ultimately, sport is a part of my life, and I spend nearly all my non-racing time engaged in sports."
Sainz also shared that becoming an uncle has changed his perspective on life and led him to reconsider his thoughts on the future. "Two years ago, before my nephews, I wouldn't have even thought about becoming a father," he stated. "But now it really does seem more attainable. I view fatherhood more positively, with greater enthusiasm."
Despite his growing international recognition fueled by the rise of Formula 1 and Netflix's impact, Sainz maintains that his focus has not shifted. "Professionally, I can say with complete certainty that I haven’t stopped pushing to improve at any moment over these 11 years, in every aspect," he asserted.
