Red Bull found the reason for Verstappen's retirement in Monaco.
The Monaco race ended for Max Verstappen barely after it started – the four-time world champion retired from the race, returning to the pits at the end of the first lap. Red Bull Racing team principal Laurent Mekies stated that the team found the cause of the power unit failure, but did not disclose it.
Laurent Mekies: “We identified the cause of the problem. It occurred during the formation lap and left neither him nor us any chance. That’s the issue.
You may know that this was Max's first power unit of the season, which was planned to be replaced after Monaco. Everything happened differently than we wanted. Obviously, we can only apologize to Max because he worked excellently with the team to achieve such speed in Monaco.
It may be too early to discuss how to fix this, but we believe we have identified the cause of the problem.”
