The BYD group continues negotiations with the FIA and F1.
The Chinese conglomerate BYD intends to become the largest car manufacturer in the world by 2030, and it's no surprise that its management is looking into Formula 1. During the race weekend in Shanghai, top executives from the conglomerate already met with Stefano Domenicali, and last weekend in Monaco, the negotiations continued. Involved were not only the president and CEO of Formula 1 but also Mohammed ben Sulayem, with BYD represented by Stella Li, the vice president of the Chinese automotive giant. After that, the FIA president shared a photo on his social media pages taken during the conversation with Ms. Li. She summarized the outcomes of the meetings in Monaco: "BYD has very serious intentions; we are exploring future opportunities, technology issues, and we need to understand what resources we have."
In general, there was no increase in specifics, but the mere fact of negotiations at such a high level already says something. In theory, the scenarios can vary, from acquiring one of the existing teams to creating its own factory team, but as Chinese sources note, the direction of Formula 1's development contradicts BYD's values. If the conglomerate is betting on the production of electric vehicles and hybrid cars, the championship intends to return to powertrains in a few years that will be based on powerful V8 gasoline engines with a not-so-significant electric component. However, there is always a compromise option: the Chinese conglomerate could become the title partner of one of the teams, and this scenario is the easiest to implement.
