Danner supports Russell in bouncing back from the setback against Antonelli for the title.
George Russell's quest for the championship may be diminishing quickly, but former Formula 1 driver Christian Danner believes that the Mercedes racer is still just as skilled as the clear leader, Kimi Antonelli. Russell’s challenging streak continued in Monaco, placing him 68 points behind his teenage teammate, who has claimed victory in five out of six races. The Brit acknowledged, "I’m struggling to understand what is happening." Following Antonelli’s recent win, Russell’s earlier remark from Montreal stating that the title is now "Kimi’s to lose" has become even more pertinent.
While some onlookers feel that Antonelli is currently outperforming his more seasoned teammate, Russell asserts that luck has played a significant part. "I’ve faced major lows in my career when I’ve underperformed for a few races in a row," he noted. "However, I’ve never gone through such a stretch of unfortunate events." Danner agrees that the circumstances have greatly favored the 19-year-old Italian. "Kimi has all the luck, and George has all the misfortune," he remarked to Speed Week. "He just needs to push through it. The racing gods will ultimately adjust things, and Kimi will come to realize that at some point."
The German maintains that the two Mercedes drivers are still closely matched despite the widening points differential. "Essentially, they are evenly matched, and that’s what truly matters," said Danner. "And that’s beneficial for both of them." His advice to Russell is straightforward: "Just don’t dwell on it, keep going, drive," Danner stated. "Don’t overthink, just focus on your right foot. Whatever helps you maintain a clear mindset is crucial, because that’s what it boils down to. You must be able to do that; otherwise, you’ll be overwhelmed in this sport."
Danner is confident in Russell’s mindset to rebound. "I believe George can do it," he expressed. "He’s very clear-headed and understands what’s on the line and what he must do. I think George will regroup and will definitely be back in contention." The former driver also dismissed the notion that Antonelli's pursuit of the title has been entirely seamless. "Kimi is driving exceptionally well and earns a 10 out of 10 from me," Danner said. "However, I'm aware of how fortunate he has been to avoid crashes and not take out his teammate, among other things. I have great respect for Kimi, but also for George."
Mercedes chief Toto Wolff, on the other hand, is less concerned about discussions surrounding luck or Russell’s current downward trend. "F1 is about physics, not mysticism," he stated. "A driver doesn’t suddenly forget how to drive, and no one instantly becomes a champion. So, I’m not troubled by his performance because we know he’s among the best." Wolff acknowledges that Mercedes still needs to determine why Russell faced difficulties in Monaco. "We need to stay grounded, analyze the data, and understand why things were tough here and in Miami," he said. "Yet, it’s not like we are observing a consistent pattern throughout the season."
The Austrian continues to fully support both drivers. "I have no doubt that George will come back strong," Wolff asserted. "I couldn’t ask for a better driver pairing. We have two drivers we can count on for wins and points."
