Hamilton explained why he lost to Antonelli in Monaco.
The Ferrari team was considered the favorite for the Monaco Grand Prix, but in the recent race, Lewis Hamilton could not match the winner Kimi Antonelli. On Thursday in Barcelona, the seven-time world champion explained why he could not maintain the same pace as the Mercedes driver.
Lewis Hamilton: "I didn't go into the details of the analysis, but in my opinion, it all comes down to the level of downforce. We brought updates to Miami, which the team worked very hard on, while Mercedes went without any new features and still confidently won the race.
Then in Montreal, they brought many updates that were estimated to allow them to gain four to five tenths of a second per lap. But since the Canadian track has many slow corners, the effect of the updates was not as noticeable there.
However, in Monaco, everything became clear. When Kimi was ahead of me, I could see how much earlier he could start accelerating out of the corners and how much more stable the rear of the car was. I just couldn't keep that pace. And it really comes down to downforce."
Commenting on the FIA's decision to designate the Red Bull power unit as the benchmark under the ADUO program, Lewis said: "Certainly, that decision was a surprise, as the Red Bull and Mercedes engines are very close in their characteristics.
Red Bull has done an excellent job with their power unit, but the same can be said for Mercedes. As far as I understand, some specialists moved from Mercedes to Red Bull.
They achieved what few expected from them in such a short time. For a new power unit manufacturer, this is indeed an impressive result, and they deserve respect for the work done.
At the same time, Mercedes still has a very strong power unit, possibly on par with the Red Bull engine. The difference between them is indeed minimal."
