Lawson: The more experienced I become, the better I perform.
In Monaco, Liam Lawson finished in 5th place, which is the best result for the New Zealand Racing Bulls driver this season – moreover, he matched his career-best result. This is what he was asked at the press conference in Barcelona: to what extent was the joy in Monaco comparable to the emotions he experienced last year in Baku, where he also finished fifth?
Liam Lawson: "To be honest, the emotions were completely different. Monaco is a unique race. Especially considering where we started the weekend, as we were not particularly competitive, and we had to make some significant changes to the car's setup. After that, the events of Sunday turned into a sort of emotional 'roller coaster.'
I honestly didn't think I would be able to start the race. When I arrived in the garage, the car was dismantled. We had a problem, but the team did an excellent job and managed to get everything done properly. I went out on track, completed one lap to take my position on the starting grid, but we had no opportunity to check what was happening with the balance, to feel how the car was behaving.
However, we managed, although, of course, we need to keep working to achieve the necessary stability. It's fair to say that we are not truly competitive, but at least we can perform at an acceptable level. And when our rivals have problems, we manage to take advantage of that. I believe that's what happened in Monaco. Overall, everything came together nicely there.
I think the cars have become very interesting to drive this year. We are definitely still adapting to them, the learning process continues, and it's clear that the pace of development is very high right now. You could say that at most races this season, we are making important discoveries – although I think this applies to everyone.
Probably, the same is happening on a personal level. I believe we are constantly evolving and learning. And the more experienced I become, the better I perform. I would say that compared to last year, I feel more prepared."
When Liam was asked about the power unit produced by Red Bull Ford Powertrains, particularly in the context of the ADUO program, he likely didn't take this into account, so he responded: "I think our engine builders have worked incredibly well, and we have a very competitive power unit. Although it's hard to say whose engines are the best right now. You see, all teams have different levels of efficiency adjusted for downforce and all that.
Even within one team, you can sometimes see differences between cars in speed on the straights, etc. So I don't know if we have the best engine, but I just know that it's very good."
