Alonso acknowledges that Barcelona might be his last Spanish Grand Prix.

Fernando Alonso has acknowledged that this weekend's Spanish GP might be his final Formula 1 race in Barcelona. The two-time world champion, who will turn 45 next month, is still uncertain about his future in racing after his current Aston Martin contract expires. With Barcelona not included in the 2027 calendar and set to return only in 2028, Alonso recognized that this year's race holds special importance.

"It's going to be a special weekend, probably my last race in Barcelona for Formula 1," he stated. "I want to thank everyone." The Spaniard remains one of the sport's most prominent figures in his home country, with thousands of fans chanting "Alonso quedate" (Alonso stay) during his appearance at the fan zone on Thursday. "I think it's my 23rd Spanish Grand Prix, and all of them have been magical," Alonso remarked. "This last one also needs to be magical."

When asked if he might still be racing when Barcelona returns in two years, Alonso admitted that he has no idea what the future holds. "After summer, I will decide whether to continue or not," he explained. "But Barcelona won't be happening next year, so if I don’t know what I will do next year, it's nearly impossible to be certain about two years from now."

The Aston Martin driver mentioned that he has approached every race this season as if it could be his last at that particular track. "In Australia, my last time. In China, my last time. In Monaco..."

This uncertainty comes amid a challenging season for Aston Martin and Honda, with the team struggling at the back of the grid despite significant investment and the arrival of Adrian Newey. Yet, Alonso asserts that thoughts of retirement are not occupying his mind. "The hardest part is not winning races and not being competitive," he shared. "Whether it's the last or not, it’s not affecting me too much. I'm at peace with my career and life."

He added, "If something comes now, it's welcome. If it doesn’t, it won't change how I feel." Alonso expressed that his accomplishments have far surpassed what he envisioned as a child racing karts in Spain. "I have achieved much more than I ever dreamed," he said. "I never imagined I would be a Formula 1 driver, racing for the best teams, and lasting for such a long time. So everything from now on is a bonus."

Regarding Aston Martin's challenges, Alonso stated that he remains fully motivated despite the disappointing start to the new regulations era. "Motivation hasn’t changed much," he emphasized. "I believe in myself and have complete confidence in my abilities."
