Rumors of an Alonso-Alpine reunion are circulating throughout the paddock.

      "I’m open to many scenarios."

Fernando Alonso is currently at the center of one of the most talked-about rumors in the Barcelona paddock. As reported by Sky Italia journalist Roberto Chinchero, the two-time world champion is reportedly considering a surprising move to Alpine for the year 2027, which could lead to a reunion with Flavio Briatore. "Gasly will remain with the team, but Colapinto mentions that it also relies on Alonso's situation," Chinchero noted from Barcelona. "Franco has a strong bond with Williams."

Some analysts believe Aston Martin might be exploring other options due to Alonso’s age, as the Spaniard will turn 45 next month, while others highlight Briatore’s impact and the potential of a Mercedes-powered, Gucci-sponsored Alpine. Nevertheless, Aston Martin quickly dismissed the speculation. "It’s not true, it’s just a rumor from the paddock," a spokesperson told Soy Motor.

However, Alonso did not wholly dismiss the rumors when asked if Aston Martin is his only choice. "I don’t know. I’m open to many scenarios," he responded. The rumors started to circulate following Alonso's hints during the Spanish GP weekend that he might not have much time left in his Formula 1 career. When questioned by Mundo Deportivo about a possible future management role, Alonso acknowledged that his extensive experience could still prove beneficial to a team after he retires from racing.

"I haven’t thought about it yet," he laughed. "But you never know what the future may bring. I've been involved in the sport for 20 or 25 years now. I'm becoming aware that there are engineers around here with only six or nine years of experience. The engine technicians, gearbox designers, and aerodynamics engineers - except for Adrian Newey - most of them haven't been here for even twelve years."

"I can’t define my potential role just yet, but I believe that experience can be valuable someday." The discussion around Alonso’s future is also fueled by Aston Martin's poor performance in the 2026 season, with the team facing significant issues despite the addition of Honda and Adrian Newey. When asked how he decides whether to continue racing, Alonso admitted that drivers are often lured by the belief that the next season will be an improvement.

"It’s a cycle that never ends because next year always appears more promising than the current one," he explained. "Therefore, it's challenging for a driver to determine the right moment to stop when the opportunity arises. In my situation, I'm guided mostly by how I feel in the car and how much enjoyment I get from driving."

Alonso also pointed out that the modern Formula 1 calendar and the current generation of cars are not helping the situation. "These cars aren't the most enjoyable to drive. I've experienced more exciting vehicles than this year's F1 cars, regardless of the outcomes. Moreover, we now have 24 races. When I started in Formula 1, there were only 16, with 11 in Europe. So you have to consider what you want to do."

The frustrations of the 2026 season were also evident when Alonso commented on Aston Martin's challenges. "It’s the same old story," he noted. "I get that you want to critique the team, but the situation is what it is - we have a very poor engine, the worst, along with inadequate power distribution and issues with the gearbox and aerodynamics. We're addressing all these problems and hope for improvement in the second half of the season so we can give them something to celebrate."

Additionally, Alonso's impressive streak of 42 consecutive qualifying wins over teammate Lance Stroll came to an end in front of his home crowd on Saturday. "It was a good run, but he was ahead in some sprint sessions which didn’t count," Alonso remarked. "He was right there with Sebastian (Vettel), so Lance is a very quick driver."
