Todt dismisses pessimism regarding the future of Formula 1.

"I don’t want to engage in nostalgia."

Jean Todt has downplayed worries regarding Formula 1's contentious new regulations for 2026. Many in the paddock have criticized the new rules package since its introduction this year, with the electric component set to be lessened in 2027 and 2028, and there are already plans emerging for a future with normally aspirated, V8 engines. However, former Ferrari head and FIA president Todt perceives the situation differently.

"Many speak of a revolution in Formula 1, as though we are facing something entirely new compared to the past," he told La Gazzetta dello Sport in Barcelona. "But for me, that’s not the reality. It’s an evolution, not a revolution. There have been changes that have resulted in significant successes, which I appreciate, but the essence of Formula 1 remains unchanged."

At 80 years old, Todt is no longer a frequent attendee at grands prix, though he did visit the Spanish GP weekend for a Pirelli event. When asked if there’s anything he misses about Formula 1's past, the Frenchman was clear. "No, because I don’t want to indulge in nostalgia. It serves no purpose, and I’ve never been fond of it. Life is like a film - it evolves, changes, and those who cease to adapt to those changes find themselves lost."

Todt’s time at Ferrari was marked by exceptional success, with Michael Schumacher clinching five consecutive world championships from 2000 to 2004. Reflecting on that era, he noted one of his greatest joys is seeing many former colleagues now in prominent roles across Formula 1. "It’s fulfilling to see many of those who worked with me now hold such significant posts in Formula 1," he remarked on Saturday. "Seeing Stefano Domenicali leading F1 fills me with pride, as does Laurent Mekies at Red Bull, Mattia Binotto at Audi, and Andrea Stella at McLaren. I don’t claim credit for their success, but I’m pleased to have been part of their journey. Watching them excel in their current roles reminds me how valuable our shared experiences were."

Todt opted not to comment on Ferrari's current situation. "I prefer not to discuss it, as there’s no point in making comparisons," he stated. "As I walked past their hospitality area in the paddock, some team members smiled at me as soon as they recognized me. It’s special for me to have contributed to this great story."

He also spoke highly of championship leader Kimi Antonelli, who has made a remarkable impression in 2026, becoming Italy’s first serious title contender in years. "I don’t know him on a personal level, but he’s incredibly talented, and his results validate that. While credit should also go to the car he drives, as Mercedes is outstanding this year, Formula 1 is about a great driver paired with a great car. He faced more challenges last year, but he has developed correctly and handled a tough situation mentally very well. He’s respectful, kind, and humble; I wish him all the best. This is excellent news for Italy, as you’ve been hoping for a top-tier driver for a long time, and now you finally have one."
