Toto Wolff: Hamilton is a title contender in 2026.

      Team principal of Mercedes Toto Wolff called Lewis Hamilton one of the contenders for the championship title this season and admitted that he would like to avoid a direct battle with his former driver, as he knows well how difficult it is to stop Lewis when he gains momentum.

      Toto Wolff: "I would prefer not to be Lewis's competitor in the title fight because I know what he is capable of. If he smells blood, he will immediately go on the attack. Over many years, I have seen him gain speed, and then stopping this train called Lewis Hamilton becomes extremely difficult.

      He is undoubtedly among the title contenders. The season is still in its early stages, and he is 41 points behind. As you can see, a retirement leads to a loss of 25 points, so the whole battle is still ahead. That’s why we cannot afford not to finish. We need to keep working on the car and the power unit, avoid mistakes, stick to a smart strategy, and remain absolutely focused."

      The Mercedes chief added that he was happy for Lewis Hamilton's first victory with Ferrari and jokingly suggested that his romantic relationship with Kim Kardashian helped the seven-time world champion improve his form.

      “Lewis has worked so hard and gone through so many tough moments, especially last year, that I am genuinely happy for him, happy for his victory,” continued Toto Wolff. “I have always said: if we are not going to win, then let it be Lewis. And in Barcelona, he truly deserved the win.

      Of course, one could say that the virtual safety car came out at just the right moment for him, but that’s part of racing. I am also happy for Frederic Vasseur, who has had a tough time lately. He is my friend, even if he sometimes gets on my nerves, just as I do to him.

      But the pressure associated with leading Ferrari is colossal. So I am happy for him, feel relief, and genuinely care about his success.

      When I saw Lewis on the podium on TV, I could tell from his face – he was truly happy. Perhaps his girlfriend played a role. It really helped me to have someone by my side with whom I could build a stable family life. It seems that things are going well for them too.

      I think it’s about the combination of all factors – emotional, personal, and professional. When everything is in order in all these aspects, then victories come.”
