While many people today favor luxury, high-end pickups, others prefer the essentials. They find a cloth bench seat preferable to lavish leather seats. These are the customers who purchase the Chevy Silverado WT—along with fleet buyers. For the 2027 model year, this work truck variant can now be equipped with the powerful 3.0-liter Duramax diesel engine.

Previously, the Silverado WT was only offered with the 2.7-liter TurboMax four-cylinder and the 5.3-liter V8. The TurboMax remains the standard engine (now paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission instead of the earlier eight-speed), while General Motors introduces a new 5.7-liter small-block to replace the V8. Although we don’t have the power ratings for the new 350 V8, it is expected to be the highest horsepower option, whereas the diesel should provide the best torque output, delivering 495 lb-ft in its current tuning.

We still have much to discover about the 2027 Silverado 1500, which just premiered on Tuesday, but we can make some educated assumptions based on the outgoing model. The 3.0-liter Duramax allows 2026 model-year trucks to tow up to 13,300 pounds, providing the smoothness typical of a diesel inline-six. While a V8 can also accomplish this, it may not be as pleasant. Furthermore, the diesel engine is expected to achieve better fuel efficiency than a small-block and potentially even the TurboMax four-cylinder, which consumes more fuel when the turbo engages.

The current 3.0-liter Duramax diesel (LZ0) produces 305 hp and 495 lb-ft of torque. It also has an EPA-rated fuel economy of 25 mpg combined in 4×2 configurations. Kory Peterson.

I reached out to Chevrolet to inquire whether the Duramax option would be limited to specific cab, bed, and drivetrain combinations. A spokesperson indicated, “Further details on specific configuration availability will be provided closer to the launch.” The 3.0-liter engine has previously only been available in crew cab models, and this may remain unchanged. However, imagine if Chevy surprises us by offering the diesel in a single cab. That would be impressive.

While we await further information, we can all appreciate a base model truck on steel wheels that uses the green handle at the fuel pump. The world is certainly better with more of these on the road.

A basic half-ton with steel wheels and a smoothly operating turbodiesel inline-six engine seems like a solid combination.
