Jeep is eager for you to consider the new Cherokee when shopping for a vehicle, emphasizing its readiness for adventure. However, the absence of a Trail Rated model (a term coined by Jeep) has been noticeable since the iconic nameplate was reintroduced earlier this year. That changed today.
On Monday, Jeep announced the return of the Cherokee Trailhawk, giving us our first look at its new model designed to offer "more off-road capability."
Last year, Jeep CEO Bob Broderdorf assured us that the new Jeep Cherokee would still perform well off-road. So far, that promise has yet to be fulfilled. However, Broderdorf mentioned that it would take time for additional hybrid-only crossover models to be released.
The Cherokee Trailhawk features a redesigned front fascia with red tow hooks. There's not much else visible from the close-up shot, except that the main bumper isn’t body-colored. We hope the approach and departure angles are enhanced compared to the current street-oriented models. Smaller wheels paired with larger tires would be fitting and anticipated.
Don’t expect significant changes to the powertrain. Currently, the Cherokee is equipped only with a 1.6-liter turbo-four hybrid that delivers 210 horsepower and 230 lb-ft of torque, powering all four wheels through an e-CVT. A two-speed transfer case is probably not in the plans, but a rear locker might be included for the Trailhawk variant. Additional off-road drive modes are likely to accompany this model.
Jeep hasn’t provided further details beyond the single teaser image, stating the automaker is preparing for enhanced off-road capabilities, with more information to follow at a later time.
This announcement comes at a crucial time as the automaker has been somewhat adrift and fans are hoping for a return to form.
