Roman Dumas achieved his sixth victory at Pikes Peak.
The traditional and consistently popular Pikes Peak International Hill Climb in the American state of Colorado is a challenging test even for spectators. On race day, to make it to the track, one must wake up at three in the morning, as all roads will be closed afterward. But for true enthusiasts, this is not a problem.
The famous mountain course is 19.99 km long, starting at an altitude of 2860 m above sea level, featuring 156 turns, with the finish line much closer to the clouds at an elevation of 4300 m.
This past weekend, the race took place for the 104th time, and the winner, redeeming himself from last year's disappointment, was Romain Dumas, driving a specially prepared Ford Super Mustang Mach-E EV.
For the French driver, this marks his sixth such achievement, although last year he lost the title of "King of the Mountain" to Italian Simone Faggioli, who won the qualification this time as well; however, technical issues with his Nova Proto NP01 ATM Bardahl Super Unlimited sports prototype prevented him from competing for victory.
The 48-year-old Romain Dumas raced through the course in 8:18.202, outpacing another well-known master of this unique racing genre, Robin Shute, who has four victories at Pikes Peak. The British engineer, now living in the USA, recorded the second-fastest time in a specially built Sendycar V1 with an 850-horsepower engine, resembling a racing formula the most. However, Shute was declared the winner in the Super Unlimited category. Faggioli finished only third this time.
There were incidents: driver Patrick Callaghan, also competing in the Super Unlimited class, crashed at high speed and was taken to the hospital, but reports indicate that he is conscious, in stable condition, and not in serious danger.
