If you attempted to purchase a Land Rover Defender, Discovery, or Range Rover over the weekend, you likely discovered it wasn’t possible. This is because Jaguar Land Rover is currently not selling these models.

A spokesperson for Jaguar Land Rover confirmed to The Drive that the Range Rover, Discovery, and Defender are currently under a stop-sale order and have been recalled due to a problem with the airbag system.

“JLR is voluntarily conducting a recall to resolve a potential issue affecting the driver’s airbag system in certain Range Rover, Discovery, and Defender vehicles manufactured between April 2019 and June 2026,” the spokesperson stated.

At this time, it is unclear how many Discoverys, Defenders, and Range Rovers were produced and sold during that period.

New models affected by the recall cannot be sold until the issue is addressed for safety reasons. JLR has fixed the problem for vehicles currently in production, which are now being shipped to dealers. A repair service campaign is currently in progress, and customers can still place orders for new models today. However, vehicles already built that are located at dealerships will need to be repaired “as quickly as possible,” according to JLR.

JLR mentioned that it has not been made aware of any issues involving airbag non-deployment at this time. The recall and stop-sale decision are preventative measures following internal engineering tests that identified the problem.

JLR has notified the NHTSA regarding the situation; however, as of the publication time, no recall or stop-sale notice has been issued by the safety agency.

Owners of potentially affected vehicles will be contacted and provided information on the next steps for repairs. Repairs will be performed at no cost, and JLR assured that all efforts will be made to minimize any inconvenience to customers, as stated to The Drive.

Customers may reach out to their local dealership for inquiries about repairs, but JLR will also be sending out recall notifications to inform owners about the recall.
