Palmer: Rivals are gradually catching up to Mercedes
Former Formula 1 driver and F1 TV commentator Jolyon Palmer believes that Mercedes no longer has such a significant advantage as at the beginning of the season…
Jolyon Palmer: “From the recent Grands Prix, it is clear that rivals are closing the gap to Mercedes. Lewis and Ferrari are in great shape, Verstappen has started from the front row in several races, and the McLaren drivers are back in the fight – Mercedes no longer has the previous dominance.
Of course, Mercedes will respond to the developments, they are still very fast, and the tracks for the upcoming races suit them well. Although Austria also suits Ferrari, so Lewis has a chance again.
Hamilton is consistent, and the Ferrari car is noticeably progressing. The updates that worked in Barcelona have improved its aerodynamic efficiency – otherwise, they wouldn’t have been able to win on a track that is demanding on aerodynamics. Clearly, the huge gap between Mercedes and the other teams that we saw in the early races is gradually closing.”
