It's that season again. The grass is lush, the sun is blazing, and automakers are setting their sights on the 2027 model year. This means it’s time for our yearly roundup of "American Made" rankings. If you anticipated that two years of protectionist policies would favor domestic production, the 2026 rankings may present a somewhat mixed picture.

If you prefer to celebrate a classic American vehicle, you might need to adjust your expectations. Among the top 10 vehicles listed in the 2026 Cars.com American Made Index, only four—two Teslas and two Jeeps—are from traditional American manufacturers. The other six are all Toyota and Honda models.

      Tesla Model 3

      Tesla Model Y

      Jeep Gladiator

      Jeep Grand Cherokee

      Honda Ridgeline

      Honda Odyssey

      Lexus TX 350

      Honda Accord

      Acura MDX

      Honda Passport

Several entries on this list aren't particularly surprising. Honda has been manufacturing the Accord in the U.S. for many years, and it frequently appears on lists of vehicles made in America with American parts; in contrast, its traditional rival, the Toyota Camry, slipped to #11 this year, overtaken by the Jeep Grand Cherokee, which improved drastically from a previous ranking of #70. The removal of the plug-in hybrid 4xe model (and its battery sourced from abroad) likely played a significant role in this rise.

The Jeep Wrangler, however, doesn’t show up until #23—just below the Ford Mustang, which often ranks higher. The first large SUV listed is the Lincoln Navigator at #12, with the Ford Expedition following closely at #13. The full-size SUVs from GM occupy spots 36-39, while the Jeep Grand Wagoneer is last at #44.

Out of approximately 350 vehicles available in the U.S. in 2026, Cars.com culled its list down to just 86 that are built or produced within America. If you're surprised by the absence of large American trucks in the top 10, you're not the only one:

"When consumers were asked to identify a selection of vehicles they thought were built in the U.S., the vast majority chose the Ford F-150, with 71% believing it to be American-made," the report summary stated.

However, the F-150 is not the most American full-size pickup on the list; that title goes to the Toyota Tundra, which sits at #16. The F-150 comes in at #27 and #26 (for Hybrid and Non-Hybrid versions), while the Ram 1500 ranks at #55. The GMC Sierra and Chevy Silverado are much lower at #78 and #82, respectively, alongside models like the Genesis GV70 and Hyundai Santa Fe Hybrid (both manufactured in Alabama).

“This year’s list highlights the ongoing transformation and variety of American-made vehicles,” noted Patrick Masterson, Cars.com’s lead researcher. “Notably, nearly two-thirds of this year’s list comes from foreign automakers, similar to the figures from 2025, while the Detroit Three account for around one-third of the vehicles.”

“The automakers contributing the most models to the AMI may surprise many, with Toyota supplying a total of 14 and Honda 13. The original manufacturers follow next—GM, Ford, and Stellantis with 13, nine, and six, respectively. Interestingly, by state, Michigan still has the most AMI-ranked factories, but half of these are located in the South, which is 7% more than in the Midwest.”

Yet, even in the South, many of these operations are sending profits abroad.

“Of the 46 auto plants based in the U.S., 25 are operated by foreign-owned companies and 21 by domestic companies,” the report stated.
