F3: Noi Stromsted achieved his first victory of the season
Noah Stromsted won the Formula 3 race on Sunday in Spielberg. Along with the Trident driver, the leader of the individual standings, Ugo Ugochukwu, and Freddy Slater, Stromsted's teammate, joined him on the podium.
Sunday morning greeted the Formula 3 drivers with sunny and comfortable weather. By the time of the start, the air had warmed up to +22°C, and the asphalt temperature was +32°C.
At the start, pole holder Hiyu Yamakoshi lost the lead to Ugo Ugochukwu, while Tuukka Taponen dropped from third to fifth place, allowing Stromsted and Slater to pass.
Behind them, Evan David and Maciej Gladysz collided at the exit of the first corner, resulting in both retiring, and the safety car was deployed.
The race also started poorly for Saturday's sprint winner Ernesto Rivera, who was spun around in the first corner. The Campos driver was able to continue in last place.
The restart was given on the fourth lap of twenty-six. The leading pair maintained their positions in the first corner, while Slater overtook Stromsted in a battle for third place in the third corner. Freddy did not stop there and successfully attacked Yamakoshi in the fourth corner, moving up to second place.
Behind the leaders, Uhyun Shin and Fernando Barrichello did not share the track at the exit of the fourth corner. Both retired, and the virtual safety car was activated.
The race resumed on the seventh lap. Taponen moved up to fourth place, overtaking Stromsted. Alessandro Giusti, who started ninth, had climbed to sixth position by this point.
On the eighth lap, Stromsted returned to fourth place, overtaking Taponen in the third corner. On the next lap, in the third corner, Slater attacked Ugochukwu and took the lead in the race. Mattia Colnaghi received a five-second penalty for a violation during the virtual safety car period.
On the eleventh lap, Yamakoshi attacked Ugochukwu in the third corner, but Ugo went too wide out of the corner, hit the curb, lost speed on the acceleration, and dropped from second to third place.
On the sixteenth lap, Giusti went wide out of the ninth corner and dropped to ninth position, allowing Kato, Nakamura, and Clero to pass. On the eighteenth lap, Taito Kato overtook Taponen and moved up to sixth place. Fionn McLaughlin received a five-second penalty for going off track and gaining an advantage.
On the nineteenth lap, Yamakoshi attacked Ugochukwu in the fourth corner and returned to second place.
By the twenty-first lap, the rear tires on Slater's car had worn down significantly, and Ugochukwu began to apply pressure on him. In the battle for third place, Stromsted overtook Yamakoshi.
On the twenty-second lap, under braking in the fourth corner, Ugochukwu confidently passed Slater and took the lead in the race. On the next lap, Slater tried to counterattack but ended up letting Stromsted pass at the exit of the fourth corner.
Noah Stromsted did not stop there and on the twenty-fourth lap launched an attack on his teammate, taking the lead before the fourth corner. On the twenty-fifth lap, behind the leading trio, there was an active exchange of positions, resulting in Pedro Clero moving up to fourth place, while Yamakoshi dropped to eighth.
On the last lap, Ugochukwu and Slater exchanged positions several times, and ultimately Ugo finished second behind the winner Noah Stromsted.
For the Danish driver, the victory was his first of the season and the second of his career. Thanks to his second place, Ugochukwu maintained his lead in the individual standings. Freddy Slater moved up to second place in the individual standings, surpassing Theophile Nael, who, despite setting the fastest lap, did not earn any points.
The next round of Formula 3 will take place from July 3 to 5 in Silverstone, UK.
