At McLaren, they were repairing Norris's car during the qualifying.
The McLaren team had to urgently change the brake duct on Lando Norris's car during qualifying, as a crack was discovered on it. The issue had been identified a little earlier, but initially, they decided to simply seal the crack, which only complicated matters.
"There was a crack on the brake duct, and we decided to repair it using glue," admitted team principal Andrea Stella while speaking to the press. "An attempt was made, but when the car went out on track – I think it was Lando's second quick lap in the first part of qualifying – the crack only got bigger, even though it was sealed.
In general, at some point during qualifying, we decided to replace the duct. We knew it would take about ten minutes, so we wanted Lando to finish his attempt at the right moment and then be able to return to the track with the new part installed.
Subsequently, we tried to determine whether the problem was related to a specific way of attacking the curbs, but we did not find anything abnormal in that regard. Therefore, we believe the cause was something else; perhaps the crack formed during practice, and during qualifying, the problem only worsened.
There was nothing like that on Oscar Piastri's car, and we decided that there was no need to restrict the drivers in terms of choosing their line, as they needed to show the highest possible speed."
As a result of qualifying, Norris and Piastri will start the Austrian Grand Prix from sixth and seventh positions, respectively.
