Advanced Aftermarket Engineering: Discover How Dedicated TuxMat Is to Achieving a Perfect Fit

My initial encounter with TuxMat occurred long before any formal product testing. I was picked up from a hotel in Miami by a Mercedes EQS fitted with TuxMat, and I distinctly recall admiring how well the mats struck a balance between a sturdy yet elegant aesthetic that complemented the vehicle perfectly. Additionally, the impressive aspect of these mats is their complete coverage of the car’s interior bottom half.

Since that time, we have installed them in sedans, crossovers, and trucks, and I’ve been happy to see how well TuxMat car mats are tailored not only to individual models but also to specific trim levels. Many custom mat manufacturers provide model-specific options, but TuxMat delves into a level of detail that other aftermarket brands do not reach, thanks to Sam Cheng, TuxMat’s Director of Product Development, and his team.

I have a passion for industrial design and have recently been exploring 3D digital design ever since I started 3D printing, as the two are closely linked. It was enjoyable to geek out a bit with Sam about how TuxMat creates designs for its vehicle-specific mats.

The Tesla Model X showcases one of TuxMat's largest rear-seat liners, which offers significantly better protection than the OEM mat.

TuxMat’s dedication to a superior fitting, trim-specific design approach means that developing products is much more complex than simply creating mats for specific makes and models.

As he shared details about the company’s workflow and design process, Sam noted that contemporary car models exhibit more physical variation across trim levels compared to older models, citing examples like adjustable consoles, bench seats versus captain’s chairs, and optional ice boxes. “A customer … purchased the vehicle with the ice box and subwoofer, and the mat isn’t just bending over it—it actually navigates those contours.”

Naturally, obtaining all those measurements requires more than just tape-measuring lengths and widths. TuxMat employs an intricate 3D scanning and data refinement process to generate models of car interiors. Their development process utilizes advanced scanning equipment that uses “structured light,” which combines laser lines, blue LEDs, and infrared light to accurately scan different textures and surfaces that absorb light.

Sam explained that the scanning process usually lasts around two and a half hours, depending on the vehicle's size. Afterwards, the team cleans up the resulting polygon data. Blind spots in tight areas are resolved by performing multiple scans from different angles and stitching them together to produce a detailed model.

“We have a team of highly experienced designers who understand our coverage requirements, and they design the mat as accurately as possible without compromising safety. We incorporate safety features to ensure we clear the pedals and adhere to the OEM retention,” Sam mentioned. “Therefore, we have many unique components. For instance, Mercedes has a different method for securing mats compared to Subaru or Kia. We’ll scan all of these, document them, and obtain the precise matching hardware that fits seamlessly with the OEM style. We do this for every area. Then, we collaborate with our factory to create molds for the mats. And that’s just one part of the process—then the mats are test-fitted and refined.”

TuxMat is now delivering its second generation of mats, informed by the company’s growing wealth of knowledge and expertise. “… occasionally we’ll look at customers who have had their cars for a while, and we specifically look for scuff marks. Dirt marks, for example, point out potential improvements for us. It’s like, you might not expect to step there, but you will brush your boot against it.” Such observations are what initially propelled TuxMat towards the goal of comprehensive coverage fitment.

“Each vehicle presents a completely different design challenge,” Sam shared with me. For the Tesla Model X, for instance, “I remember those seat rails—the way those seats slide back and forth required a different approach than what we used for the recently tackled Lucid Gravity, which had a unique folding geometry that necessitated simulations.”

With a decade of operations behind it, TuxMat has amassed a substantial internal knowledge base that continues to assist in related product development. Sam cited the new Toyota RAV4 and 4Runner as examples, noting some models have “a peculiar step” to accommodate hybrid batteries beneath the floor. “So we just accessed the data and analyzed it,” adapting solutions from previous projects to assist with new ones.

The details, inserts, and accessories of TuxMat are just as impressive as the mats themselves.

While fitment is crucial, so is material selection. TuxMat car mats feature a unique TriForce™ multi-layer design that provides a plush feel without sacrificing the brand's signature clean edges. Sam explained how it functions.

“Ours features a tri-layer construction. There’s a vinyl layer on top, a mid-layer of EVA foam, and grip dots on the bottom.” This TriForce™ construction enables TuxMat to deliver
