      My initial encounter with TuxMat took place well before any formal product testing. I was once picked up at a hotel in Miami by a Mercedes EQS equipped with TuxMat, and I distinctly recall admiring how well these mats blended a rugged yet elegant look that suited the car perfectly.       Since then, we have used them in sedans, crossovers, and trucks, and I've been pleased to find that TuxMat car mats are tailored not just to specific models, but also to specific trim levels. Many custom mat companies offer options for particular models, but TuxMat excels at a level of detail that other aftermarket brands often overlook. This is the area where Sam Cheng, TuxMat’s Director of Product Development, and his team shine.

      I have a general passion for industrial design and have been diving into 3D digital design since I began 3D printing, as the two concepts naturally complement each other. I enjoyed geeking out with Sam about how TuxMat develops designs for its vehicle-specific mats.

      The Tesla Model X features one of TuxMat’s largest rear-seat liners, offering significantly better protection than the original equipment mat.

      TuxMat’s dedication to a superior fit and trim-specific design means that product development is considerably more labor-intensive than for just a make/model-specific mat set.

      While discussing the company’s workflow and design approach, Sam pointed out that modern vehicles often have more physical variations across trim levels than they did in the past, referencing examples like movable center consoles, bench seats versus captain’s chairs, and optional ice boxes. “That customer bought the car with the ice box and subwoofer, so the mat doesn't try to bend around it; it actually contours around those features.”

      Naturally, acquiring all the necessary measurements involves more than just measuring lengths and widths with a tape measure. TuxMat undergoes a detailed 3D scanning and data cleanup process to create models of car interiors. Their development process employs advanced scanning technology that utilizes “structured light,” integrating laser lines, blue LEDs, and infrared light for effective scanning of a variety of textures and light-absorbing surfaces.

      TuxMat’s comprehensive scanning technique allows for precise execution of the intricate shapes found within your car’s interior.

      Sam noted that the scanning procedure generally takes around two and a half hours, depending on the vehicle's size, after which the team refines the resulting polygon data. Areas with blind spots are managed by performing multiple scans from different angles and stitching the images together to form a highly detailed model.

      “We have a skilled team of designers who understand our coverage requirements, and they work on designing the mat to the best of our ability without compromising safety. We include safety features that ensure we avoid interfering with the pedals and comply with OEM retention standards,” said Sam. “So we have many unique components. Mercedes has a different fastening system for mats compared to Subaru, Kia, and others. We scan all of those, document them, and obtain the exact matching hardware that fits snugly into the OEM design. We repeat this for every area, then collaborate with our factory to create molds for these mats. And that's just one part of the process—mats are then test-fitted and refined.”

      TuxMat is in the process of shipping its second generation of mats, informed by an ever-growing repository of knowledge and experience. “... sometimes, we check on customers who have had their cars for some time and look for scuff markings. Dirt marks can indicate areas where we might need to improve—that’s a real insight, right? It can be unexpected, but you will end up brushing against those spots.” Such observations are what propelled TuxMat toward creating mats with comprehensive coverage from the start.

      “Every car presents a unique design challenge,” Sam explained to me. For instance, with the Tesla Model X, “I remember the seat rails—the way the seats shift forward and backward posed a different challenge compared to how we approached the Lucid Gravity, which had an unusual folding geometry that required simulations.”

      However, with a decade of experience now behind TuxMat, they possess a wealth of internal knowledge beneficial for adjacent product development. Sam mentioned the new Toyota RAV4 and 4Runner, some of which have "a peculiar step" designed to accommodate hybrid batteries beneath the floor. “So we just retrieved the data and examined it,” adapting a solution from another project to address this situation.

      TuxMat’s detailing, inserts, and accessories maintain the same high-quality standard as the mats themselves.

      While fitment is crucial, material selection is equally important. TuxMat car mats feature a special multi-layer composition known as TriForce™, which offers a plush feel while retaining TuxMat’s characteristic crisp edges. Sam explained how it functions.
