Once upon a time, a top speed of 200 mph was a significant achievement. It represented the pinnacle of hypercars, a benchmark reached only by the most exclusive vehicles ever created. While more cars are capable of reaching this speed today, it still holds special significance. Numerous electric vehicles can accelerate to 60 mph in just three seconds, but achieving a top speed of 200 mph remains uncommon. Starting with the 2027 model year, the most affordable Corvette from Chevy will be among those that can reach this mark.
The automaker has announced that the 2027 Stingray, which is the entry-level model priced at $73,495, including freight, will surpass 200 mph, thanks to its new 6.7-liter LS6 V8 engine, delivering 535 horsepower and 520 lb-ft of torque. (This torque figure sets a record for naturally aspirated V8s in production, by the way.) The LS6 generates 40 hp more than the previous 6.2-liter LT2, which Team Corvette credits with the Stingray’s ability to gain an additional 6 mph and reach 200.
“All that extra power is impressive. The record truly highlights the capabilities of the LS6, which we aimed to position uniquely within the Corvette lineup,” stated Small Block Assistant Chief Engineer Mike Kociba on the GM News blog.
Interestingly, the Corvette Z06 depicted here cannot reach 200 mph due to its wider, lower-drag body design. General Motors
However, this doesn’t mean that 200 mph is the benchmark for all C8 Corvettes. Once you consider the Z06, you're entering the realm of widebody vehicles with enhanced aerodynamics. Aerodynamics, of course, typically hinder straight-line speed. The Z06 is officially rated to a maximum of 195 mph, while the ZR1 can achieve up to 233 mph with its power exceeding 1,000.
It’s important to mention that a Stingray fitted with the optional Z51 Performance Package, which was not included in GM’s recent test vehicle, would likely not reach the same top speed due to changes in gearing and additional front and rear spoilers.
Ultimately, this gives the Stingray a unique status as the entry-level option. While it may not perform as well on the track, it can outrun its siblings given sufficient space. And all for $73,500. I wouldn't label it as the deal of the century, but it is a solid offer, especially considering the average new car price is $22,000 less than that.
