Advanced Aftermarket Engineering: Discover How Dedicated TuxMat Is to Achieving the Perfect Fit.

My initial encounter with TuxMat occurred long before any formal product evaluation. I was picked up from a hotel in Miami by a Mercedes EQS fitted with TuxMat, and I recall being impressed by how effectively the mats combined a sturdy yet elegant look that complemented the vehicle perfectly. Moreover, the standout feature of these mats is their complete coverage of the vehicle’s lower interior.

Since then, we've installed them in sedans, crossovers, and trucks, and I’ve been happy to see how well TuxMat car mats are tailored not only to specific models but also to particular trim levels. Many custom mat manufacturers provide model-specific options, but TuxMat delves deeper into the specifics than most aftermarket brands. This attention to detail is the responsibility of Sam Cheng, TuxMat’s Director of Product Development, and his team.

I have a strong passion for industrial design and have recently started exploring 3D digital design, particularly since I began 3D printing (the two concepts naturally complement each other). It was enjoyable to discuss with Sam how TuxMat develops its vehicle-specific mat designs.

The Tesla Model X features one of TuxMat’s largest rear-seat liners, offering significantly better protection than the OEM mat.

TuxMat’s dedication to superior fitment with a trim-specific design approach makes product development more challenging than it would be for mats designed solely for a make and model.

As Sam described the company’s workflow and design process, he noted that newer model cars show more physical variation across trim levels compared to older models, citing examples like movable consoles, bench seats versus captain's chairs, and optional ice boxes. “That customer... purchased the vehicle with the ice box and subwoofer, so the mat is designed not to bend over it – it actually conforms to those shapes,” he explained.

Naturally, gathering all those measurements is more complex than simply measuring lengths and widths. TuxMat employs a sophisticated 3D scanning and data cleanup process to create models of car interiors, using advanced scanning equipment that features “structured light,” which combines laser lines, blue LEDs, and infrared light to accurately capture various textures and light-absorbing surfaces.

Sam detailed that the scanning process generally takes about two and a half hours, depending on the vehicle size, after which the team refines the polygon data. Areas that are difficult to access are covered by capturing multiple scans from various angles and merging them into a high-fidelity model.

“We have a team of incredibly experienced designers who understand our coverage needs, and they create the mats to the best of their ability without compromising safety. We include safety features that ensure clearance for the pedals and comply with OEM retention,” Sam stated. “Every vehicle brand has distinct methods for securing mats, from Mercedes to Subaru to Kia. Hence, we document and scan those systems and match the hardware precisely to the OEM style. This is done for every single area, after which we collaborate with our factory to create molds for the mats. And that’s just one phase—the mats are also test-fitted and refined.”

TuxMat is currently distributing its second generation of mats, which are informed by the company's expanding knowledge and experience. “… sometimes we examine vehicles that customers have owned for a while, looking for scuff marks. Dirt marks can present opportunities for us; you might not think you'll step there, but you often do brush against it.” Such observations guided TuxMat in its pursuit of comprehensive coverage fitment.

“Every vehicle presents a unique design challenge,” Sam mentioned. For instance, with the Tesla Model X, “I distinctly remember the seat rails—the way those seats shift forwards and backwards required a different approach compared to how we approached the Lucid Gravity model, which has an unusual folding design we needed to simulate.”

Having operated for a decade, TuxMat also boasts a vast internal knowledge library that aids in adjacent product development. Sam referenced the new Toyota RAV4 and 4Runner, some of which have “a peculiar step” to accommodate hybrid batteries under the floor. “So we simply accessed our existing data and adapted a solution from another project,” he explained.

The details, inserts, and accessories of TuxMat are as impressive as the mats themselves.

While proper fitment is crucial, material selection is equally important. TuxMat car mats feature a unique multi-layer technology called TriForce™, which allows for a plush feel without sacrificing the brand's signature crisp edges. Sam explained its construction.

“It’s a tri-layer design: a vinyl layer on top, a middle layer made of EVA foam, and grip dots on the base.” This TriForce™ structure enables TuxMat to offer a product that feels soft where necessary while providing firmness where it's required.

“That’s what sets us apart,” Sam elaborated. In contrast to less expensive mats, which often feel like hard plastic—especially in winter—TuxMat's feel is soft and plush. Sam recalled when
