On the weekend with Saturday's sprint, teams rarely bring new items and do not put rookies behind the wheel. There is only one practice session on such weekends, and the schedule is tight – teams work only with the main solutions and those solutions intended for a specific track. Many of them, including Ferrari's new floor, were tested in practice at other events. For the first time since the Monaco Grand Prix, only the main drivers worked on the track.
The drivers did not sit in the pits. Everyone started the session with a series of laps on Hard tires to determine the configuration and settings. After completing a series, the drivers entered the pits for a front wing replacement and adjustments – and went out again. Hamilton set the best time on Hard – 1:30.521.
Norris and Antonelli went off the track, and Piastri spun out in the 12-13 corner sequence – with no consequences for the cars.
In the last fifteen minutes, the drivers went out on Medium and Soft tires. Speeds increased. Once again, Hamilton was the fastest – 1:29.260. Last year, the best time in the first practice was also set by Lewis – 1:26.892.
