Lewis Hamilton won the sprint qualifying.
Sunny. Dry. Air +26…25°C, track +42…40°C.
For the first time since 2021, the British weekend took place in a format with a Saturday sprint, so after the only practice session, where Lewis Hamilton set the best time, the drivers had a short qualifying session to determine the starting order for the sprint.
Pirelli brought the "medium" trio of compounds – C2, C3, and C4 as Hard, Medium, and Soft. Compared to the very hot Austrian stage last week, the weather was much more comfortable, easing the task for the cars and drivers.
In the first session, the drivers went out on Mediums, as required by the rules. The tires allowed the drivers to complete a series of fast lap - slow - fast, which everyone took advantage of.
Norris's car lost a fragment of the brake duct, and the mechanics in the pits inspected the car.
Hamilton set the best time, completing a lap in 1:29.273. Berman, Ocon, Perez, Bottas, Alonso, and Stroll – the three weakest teams were eliminated from further competition.
In the second session, the scenario repeated – everyone again went out on Mediums and worked in series of laps. The speeds increased – the drivers immediately went faster than 1:29.
Hamilton again set the best time – 1:28.747. Gasly, Bortoleto, Hülkenberg, Colapinto, Sainz, and Albon did not make it to the final.
In the final, everyone went out on Softs. The softest tires did not allow for several consecutive laps, there was only time for one attempt, and no one was in a hurry to leave the pits.
Hamilton topped the protocol with 1:28.376, beating Kimi Antonelli by one hundredth, while the others lagged by more than three tenths.
Lewis Hamilton won the sprint qualifying for the third time in his career and the second time at Silverstone. Tomorrow, he will share the front row with championship leader Kimi Antonelli, with Verstappen and Leclerc starting from the second row, and Russell and Norris from the third.
