Vasseur states that Hamilton will remain, while Ferrari supports both of its drivers.
"It’s definitely not a matter of speed"
Frederic Vasseur has provided his clearest indication to date that Lewis Hamilton is likely to stay with Ferrari through 2027, although he emphasized that it’s premature to discuss a contract renewal. This comes amidst increasing speculation that Hamilton’s current Ferrari contract may contain an option for 2027, with reports suggesting that its activation hinges significantly on either his performances or his desire to continue. When asked directly by Corriere della Sera if Hamilton would remain for 2027, Vasseur simply responded: "Yes."
However, when the topic resurfaced at Silverstone, the Ferrari team principal was more guarded. "Who talked about the extension?" Vasseur grinned. "I will have discussions with him regarding the extension, as I will with everyone. He is still contracted with us, and it’s not the right moment to talk about an extension."
These remarks came after Hamilton unexpectedly secured sprint pole at Silverstone, even as Ferrari continues to emphasize its pursuit of enhanced engine performance and is preparing a second ADUO power unit upgrade for later this season, likely before Monza. In an interview with Sky Italia, Hamilton shared that he now feels completely at home at Maranello. "An eighth world championship? I remain grounded, but I’m striving toward it," he mentioned. "I enjoy what I do, and that motivates me. I still maintain a strong connection with the younger version of myself, and I feel at home here. I believe I still have something to offer. Transitioning to Ferrari is a significant shift due to the entirely different culture, but being part of this team is a genuine privilege."
Meanwhile, Vasseur dismissed the notion that Hamilton’s presence has negatively affected teammate Charles Leclerc, who has openly acknowledged difficulty in adjusting to Ferrari’s recent developments. When asked if Hamilton’s technical requirements have influenced the car's design, Vasseur replied, "Charles also demands a lot from the team every day. But we also brought Lewis on board for his experience." He further refuted claims that Ferrari has created a car specifically for Hamilton. "No, we don’t build Formula 1 cars tailored to one driver or another," the Frenchman asserted. "At most, the cars can be developed based on the drivers’ feedback - their opinions are important, but we’re discussing minimal variations." Regarding Leclerc, Vasseur expressed that he remains unfazed. "It’s certainly not a question of speed," he stated. "He simply needs to bring everything together consistently over more laps, adapt to the new car, the latest updates, and the new brakes. Most importantly, he needs to stay composed. I’m not worried at all. There are countless people here to assist him."
