Sainz expresses concern over Williams' halted progress.
"We're unable to effectively develop the car"
Carlos Sainz has reinforced his criticism of Williams’ halted development, expressing genuine concern that the team does not grasp why its upgrades are unsuccessful. After hinting at Silverstone that the team's wind tunnel might not align with on-track performance, the Spaniard indicated that his worries grew deeper following Sunday’s race.
"It’s becoming concerning because we anticipated a significant improvement this weekend, which hasn’t occurred," Sainz stated. "I am genuinely worried."
Williams rolled out aerodynamic upgrades and a lighter front nose at Silverstone, but Sainz noted that they did not yield the anticipated results.
"It’s evident that the updates we brought this weekend haven’t worked. We expected a considerable step forward that has not been realized. It’s beginning to feel worrying and frustrating as the improvements aren’t taking effect."
The four-time grand prix winner feels the issue is more profound than the new components themselves.
"When you introduce something to the track that shows considerable lap time benefits in the wind tunnel and simulator, yet only achieve a minor improvement, it indicates there’s something wrong with our calculations, data, and development... and that’s concerning."
"With this set of regulations, for reasons we still don’t understand, we’re not able to properly develop the car."
Sainz acknowledged that Williams is now struggling to keep up with its competitors despite the introduction of new parts to the car.
"I’m worried because it’s the first time I’ve distinctly observed that the car isn’t really developing this year. We aren’t making any advancements compared to the rest of the grid. We’re approaching the weight limit, and the gap continues to grow. This indicates that aerodynamics aren’t improving, which is beginning to concern the team, as we might be facing some correlational or developmental issue."
Despite his increasing concerns, Sainz maintained that he is not losing patience.
"My patience isn’t going to wear thin. I’m relatively patient with these matters, but at this moment, I’m upset and worried."
