Verstappen 'totally finished' following the latest Red Bull setback.
Max Verstappen's frustration with Red Bull escalated after the British GP, as the Dutch driver expressed his desire to leave Silverstone and stop thinking about Formula 1 altogether. Already discontented during a challenging weekend, Verstappen's race ended prematurely due to a rear wing issue that sent him into the gravel while he was in third place. "At this point, I just want to go home and not think about Formula 1," he stated.
Verstappen claimed that even finishing on the podium wouldn't have alleviated his disappointment. "It would have left a bitter taste because we didn’t earn it." This latest setback followed closely behind a similar rear wing issue in Austria. "At that point, it’s especially super dangerous," he noted. "You can really get hurt, twice. This is why I'm completely done with it."
The race result came after yet another disagreement within the team prior to the event, where Verstappen had requested to take a new power unit and start from the pit lane due to ongoing engine issues. When asked why Red Bull denied this request, he curtly responded, "Don’t ask me that question."
Team principal Laurent Mekies later acknowledged the differing opinions. "We accept that Max had a different idea, and he is the one driving the car," the Frenchman stated. "But I’m not sure if achieving that third place would have been possible had we started from the pit lane." Mekies also apologized for the rear wing failure, assuring that they would ensure it does not happen again.
He admitted that it remains uncertain whether the recurrent failures indicate a flaw in Red Bull’s 'Macarena' rear wing concept and conceded that Verstappen's concerns regarding the team's power unit are valid. "Max is right. Drivability has been a limiting factor since the start of the season. Everyone has worked extremely hard to improve the power unit, but it’s evident that we still need to make strides in that area. This drivability difference is costing us lap time and consistency."
Verstappen, on the other hand, did not hide his anger following the race. "I’m not going to comment on the future right now. Obviously, this is frustrating. It would be very odd if I acted very 'zen' at this moment. I need a few days to reset. I’m doing my best. I can’t do more than that. Too much has gone wrong."
When asked about his next plans, Verstappen replied, "I’m going home as soon as possible. Get out of here. Right home. Right away." When questioned about his confidence in the team's expertise following a prolonged period of personnel turnover, he responded, "Time will tell. I honestly don’t want anything to do with it." Observers in the paddock noted that Verstappen seemed angrier than at nearly any point in his Formula 1 career, while cameras captured tense post-race discussions involving Mekies, Jos Verstappen, and manager Raymond Vermeulen.
