Wolff: Mercedes' reliability has become a concern for the championship.

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff acknowledges that the team's escalating reliability issues pose a risk to their 2026 championship aspirations following Kimi Antonelli’s latest setback at Silverstone. Antonelli seemed to be mounting a serious challenge to eventual winner Charles Leclerc before hitting a curb and sustaining damage that impacted his pace. However, Wolff emphasized that the young Italian should not be held responsible. "The truth is - this component shouldn’t fail."

This latest problem comes on the heels of Mercedes' recent battery reliability concerns, as Ferrari highlighted its resurgence with another win. "You can't secure a world championship with three retirements," Wolff noted. "Unquestionably, there is still everything to compete for in the championship."

Antonelli's misfortune allowed teammate George Russell to narrow the points gap between them to 25 points, though Russell remarked that the standings reflect their performances up to now. "Considering my performances and those of his over these nine races, I think a 25-point gap in his favor is probably accurate," Russell stated. "He has performed better than I have thus far this year, so he deserves to be ahead."

Russell also pointed out that whether the gap should be 25, 10, or 35 points is open to debate, but he feels that being between 10 and 30 points behind is reasonable. He candidly admitted that Mercedes still lacks the speed necessary to contend for the championship. "To be honest, I won’t be competing for the championship if our performance continues like this. I’m not pleased with this weekend."

Despite his recent five-race winning streak now behind him, Antonelli took a philosophical stance. "We had an amazing run with five consecutive wins, and I think everything was going too smoothly for me. I was aiming for the win here, and I genuinely felt we had a solid chance of it. I was close enough to challenge, so it's unfortunate I couldn’t even attempt it. The key is to return stronger."

The 19-year-old also affirmed that he would not alter his mindset despite this setback. "I don’t want to race with the championship in mind. I was 66 points ahead three races ago, and now I’m at 25. I’ve suffered two retirements, costing me significant points, which is why I must race freely, without any other concerns."
