Steiner: Germany requires political support for F1 comeback.

Former Haas team principal Guenther Steiner indicates that Germany will face challenges in getting back on the Formula 1 calendar without stronger support from both the political sphere and the industry. Since the Nurburgring hosted the pandemic-impacted 2020 Eifel GP, Germany has not held a world championship grand prix.

"The industry and politics need to be fully committed," Steiner stated to Bild. "A Grand Prix entails significant costs. However, if organized properly, it can also yield profits."

Now the co-owner and CEO of the Tech3 MotoGP team, Steiner believes that Germany currently lacks the necessary momentum to reignite its Formula 1 aspirations. "You need passionate individuals to really push the project forward," he remarked. "At this point, I don’t see anyone willing to assume that responsibility."

The 61-year-old emphasized that backing from Germany's major manufacturers would be crucial. "The project would require political support, as well as backing from the German automotive sector," Steiner noted. "For companies like Mercedes or Audi, such financial commitments would certainly be feasible."

He also mentioned that the public discourse on motorsport has become another barrier. "The main issue is that many people tend to react with apprehension to discussions about motorsport, the environment, or related topics. There's no one stepping up to say: 'We’re going to pursue this now.'"

Steiner made these comments ahead of this weekend’s MotoGP event in Germany at the Sachsenring.
