Verstappen's choices become limited as Webber dismisses speculation.
Max Verstappen’s options for 2027 seem to be decreasing as rumors about a potential move to McLaren have been firmly dismissed. Following the British GP, reports suggested that Oscar Piastri might seek an exit from his McLaren contract, which could open opportunities for Verstappen. However, Piastri’s manager, Mark Webber, countered these assertions. "Oscar is contracted to McLaren for the foreseeable future," he stated to Racer. "Claims about him wanting to leave are absurd."
Piastri echoed this sentiment during a BBC interview when questioned about the ongoing speculation connecting Verstappen to McLaren. "For me, focusing on my job is the most important thing," the Australian remarked. "I know I’m here for the foreseeable future, and I know the team is pleased with me. I’m happy with the team, and the relationship is solid. So for me, that's just background noise that I don’t need to engage with."
The uncertainty surrounding Verstappen heightened after Silverstone, where he openly criticized Red Bull due to another rear wing failure and fresh disagreements regarding strategy. Former Formula 1 driver Timo Glock believes that the team's move to become its own engine manufacturer has made Verstappen’s rumored exit clause even more relevant. "It’s evident that since the new engine regulations and Red Bull becoming a manufacturer, they’ve added more to the exit clause to ensure they can exit if things go awry," he told Heute. "Everyone's discussing the exit clause, which reportedly exists. The question remains, what alternatives does he have?"
Verstappen’s father Jos and manager Raymond Vermeulen were seen meeting with retired Red Bull advisor Dr. Helmut Marko in Amsterdam after Silverstone, amidst reports that the Verstappen camp misses Marko’s influence within the team. Glock stated that Red Bull's decline cannot be attributed to one person. "Helmut Marko was instrumental in the team's success and brought in the right personnel," he remarked. "They are all gone now, indicating a restructuring is underway, and you can't just replace individuals with that level of experience."
Former Formula 1 driver Christian Danner doubts Verstappen will leave. "I simply can’t envision Toto Wolff pairing Max Verstappen with his protégé Antonelli," he shared with motorsport-magazin.com. "McLaren is still viable, but the team is currently facing challenges. Honestly, I believe he’ll stay in his current position and work to improve the situation. The next three months will reveal the direction things are heading."
Former Formula 1 driver Christijan Albers thinks Mercedes has even less incentive to pursue Verstappen if Kimi Antonelli maintains his current pace. "If Kimi Antonelli continues to improve and becomes much faster than Russell, I see no reason for Toto Wolff to make another significant acquisition," he commented to De Telegraaf. He noted that Webber's interest in the driver market shouldn’t be overanalyzed. "Mark Webber is obviously still exploring options for Piastri," Albers said. "It's possible he might depart, but it has nothing to do with Max. Mark is consistently looking around, and so is Max."
