F1 Is Offering Its Wealthiest Fans an Upscale Dinner on a Flatbed While Racing Around a Track

      The latest offering in Formula 1 aimed at affluent fans is something I never anticipated. I've witnessed the trailers transporting Paddock Club attendees around the track during race weekends, along with the pit walks and Hot Laps. But this? A container converted into an upscale restaurant placed on a flat-bed truck and driven around an F1 circuit while guests dine? That one caught me off guard.

      Dubbed "The Outlap," this experience is the latest initiative from one of the sport's major partners, the luxury and beverage powerhouse Louis Vuitton Moët Hennessy. Essentially, it’s an on-the-move fine-dining experience featuring acclaimed chefs, specially curated local menus, custom drinks by LVMH, and even a storytelling F1 ambassador for the evening. While the identity of the ambassador hasn’t been revealed, images on the F1 Hospitality website depict Mika Hakkinen and Jacques Villeneuve.

      According to the announcement: The Out Lap offers guests an immersive experience aboard a dining room on wheels, navigating through the circuit. With space for just twelve guests, the experience follows a custom route tailored to each Grand Prix, stopping at some of the circuit’s most iconic spots. At each location, the history of the track is brought to life through the recollections of a former racing driver, who shares their personal take on the sport’s pivotal moments. Each chapter is showcased through an exclusive dish crafted by one of the world’s top chefs, complemented by outstanding wines and spirits from the Moët Hennessy range, blending culinary arts with racing lore. Each edition of The Out Lap is distinctive, with every circuit inspiring its own journey, stories, and culinary flair, ensuring that no two experiences are alike.

      Admittedly, this exudes elitism and the aura of the 1%, but that’s F1 for you. That said, who wouldn’t want to enjoy a meal with a past F1 champion? My only concern is the entire experience taking place in the back of a semi-truck moving around an F1 track. I tend to get motion sickness easily, so I can’t fathom how enjoyable it would be to eat, drink, converse, or visually focus on things while the restaurant is in motion—especially at a circuit with significant elevation changes like Spa, where The Outlap made its debut over the weekend.

      The pricing for this experience was not revealed, but given its exclusivity and intimacy, I can’t imagine it being anywhere near affordable. It’s likely that to secure a spot on The Outlap, one must be a Paddock Club pass holder. It's essentially an additional experience for those who purchase Paddock Club access, and it will only be available during European races this year.

      Considering that the typical three-day Paddock Club ticket can range from $10,000 to $15,000, adding a few extra thousand for a unique dinner may not seem unreasonable. If you're reading this and have experienced it or plan to, I would love to hear about it.
