If you’re still in the anodyne vibe of the 1980s, there's more exciting news on the horizon. The eagerly awaited sequel to Days of Thunder is reportedly getting closer to fruition. The Hollywood Reporter states that Paramount is considering Jonathan Levine as the director for this new chapter.
Levine is the most recent name linked to this endeavor. Tom Cruise has been advocating for the sequel since shortly after Top Gun: Maverick was released. Jerry Bruckheimer, who produced the original Days of Thunder, is also on board. Additionally, it has the support of Jeff Gordon, whom many mistakenly credit for inspiring the film—though that honor actually belongs to Tim Richmond.
Other returning cast members have yet to be confirmed. Sadly, it looks like Robert Duvall won’t be part of this project. However, given that it's 2026 and reality seems to be out of vogue, perhaps don’t hold your breath on that front? Cary, if you see this (which you likely won’t), go for it. This would be a much better nostalgia play than “Stranger Things.”
While Levine hasn't previously directed any racing films (there aren’t many around), he does have some background in sports dramas. According to the Reporter, his upcoming movie, Mr. Irrelevant: The John Tuggle Story, has performed well with test audiences. It's based on real events and tells the tale of the last pick in the 1983 NFL draft, set for release around Christmas this year.
The coming years could be promising for fans of motorsport-themed films. In addition to the Days sequel, a second part of Brad Pitt's F1 franchise is also supposedly in development. Which one will hit theaters first? It feels like a competition! Regardless, we’re definitely interested in some IMAX showings.
