Carlos Sainz has stated that he will take the summer break to thoughtfully consider his future in Formula 1 after labeling Williams’ season as "extremely poor" and well below expectations. The Spanish driver faced another challenging weekend in Hungary, qualifying in P18 and later getting involved in an incident with Oscar Piastri, who was lapping him in his McLaren. Piastri criticized Sainz for the collision, but Sainz maintained that he was unaware of the championship contender's approach. "I’m surprised he found himself in that position," Sainz remarked to Spanish media. "I believe he knows I didn’t see him."
His evaluation of Williams’ first half of the season was even harsher. "Poor, extremely poor, disappointing," he expressed. "I think it’s well below what we expected and where we aim to be as a team. If we want to escape this predicament, there’s a substantial amount of work to do, and we are aware of the areas that need improvement."
Sainz mentioned that the latest front wing had provided some assistance, but "not as much as anticipated." "The issue is not just the front wing; it’s the entire car, which is failing to generate downforce," he emphasized. He believes that his own performance has not been a significant factor. "Personally, I think there’s very little more to extract from the car," Sainz noted. "I’ve had a very strong first half of the year with these new regulations, adapting very well to the car, the engine, everything."
"I’m neither upset nor depressed." "On a personal level, I’m driving very well, but the car isn’t performing, and as a team, we must make significant progress if we want to recover." Williams' last major upgrade is anticipated in Baku, but Sainz remains guarded. "Let’s see if it can assist us in overcoming this situation."
