Numerous elements contribute to an exceptional exhaust note, but a crucial factor is the number and configuration of the cylinders. Arranging 8, 10, or 12 cylinders in a “V” configuration produces sounds that are like music to car enthusiasts, whereas V6 and V4 engines typically lack the same allure. There’s something captivating about having at least eight cylinders; however, what about a quantity beyond that, one that doesn’t occur in nature?
Achieving a functional V11 engine is impossible, as it would necessitate different cylinder counts in each bank. Nevertheless, it is feasible to mimic the sound of such an engine. Maisteer, a YouTube channel known for its exhaust-sound experiments, removed plugs from the 6.0-liter V12 in a modified R230 Mercedes-Benz SL to see how a V11 (as well as a V9) would sound.

Honestly, the 11-cylinder symphony didn’t strike me as significantly different from the functioning V12. Perhaps I was distracted by the notably non-standard exhaust system that made the Mercedes sound like a race car, or maybe I need a new set of headphones. There was a slight irregularity due to one cylinder (the third one, in this case) not firing; however, the overall tone remained quite similar. Your listening experience might differ, and accompanying frequency meter readings indicate a clear change at both the 400 Hertz and 800 Hz frequencies.
The V11 didn’t sound bad either, which is logical since another YouTuber had previously simulated an inline-11 engine with fairly good results. Such an engine could theoretically be functional, although it would be too lengthy for practical use.
I Transformed a V12 into a V8… One Cylinder at a Time
The engine was subsequently operated as a V10 and V9 by disabling cylinder 10 and then cylinder six. Once again, the odd-numbered configuration didn’t sound as distinct as anticipated. What was more intriguing was the decline in range as additional cylinders were turned off. The engine developed a richer bass tone through the process, transitioning into the familiar V8 rumble when four cylinders were deactivated. Once more, frequency meter readings reveal the true differences among the various cylinder configurations, even if they’re not readily perceptible to the ear.
Engine sounds are integral to a car's character, which is why automakers are concerned about how to replicate that soundscape in electric vehicles. Hyundai has already crafted a sci-fi soundtrack for its electric N models, Bentley considers percussion to be the best approach for its Torcal electric SUV, and BMW has merged sounds from various sources for its Neue Klasse EVs.
