      Like all vehicles, semi trucks generate tailpipe emissions that require attention. Although companies such as Tesla are developing electric semis, the challenge of needing oversized battery packs for sufficient range while transporting heavy loads makes electrifying large trucks more difficult compared to passenger vehicles. A startup based in California has proposed an unconventional alternative.

      Founded in 2020, Revoy has created a module housing a battery pack and electric motor that fits between the tractor and trailer, effectively transforming any semi truck into a temporary hybrid. While it might seem puzzling, Bloomberg reported this week that Revoy has successfully completed a $27 million funding round, indicating that there are those who believe in the idea.

      Revoy asserts that its current battery booster can provide electric assistance for up to 200 miles for an 80,000-pound truck. Rather than aiming for full electric operation, it appears to focus on enhancing fuel efficiency by alleviating some load from the diesel engine. The automated module is designed to supply power in harmony with the engine’s performance and offer regenerative braking to recharge the battery when feasible. However, since the pack is too large to be fully charged through regeneration alone, Revoy also envisions establishing a network of “hubs” where drivers can exchange the battery packs, as reported by Bloomberg.

      The company estimates that the removable module can reduce carbon emissions by up to 85%, and its operational costs are projected to be similar to those of traditional diesel trucks, even considering the lower fuel prices prior to the U.S. conflict with Iran, according to CEO Peter Reinhardt. Additionally, Revoy promotes its technology as a means to prolong the lifespan of existing diesel trucks in light of potential stricter emissions regulations.

      In 2023, Revoy received approval from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) for its equipment to be used on public roads and initiated a pilot program with Ryder the following year. The startup intends to commence commercial operations on a 200-mile route near Portland, Oregon, later this year, utilizing modules constructed with components from China and a specially trained team of drivers. Moving forward, Revoy aims to utilize funds from its recently concluded round of funding to create a more affordable version featuring a smaller battery but with a similar range per charge, assuming the company continues to operate.

      Although Revoy’s solution depends on existing trucks, it still does not resolve the prominent issue related to battery-electric vehicles: the necessity for specialized infrastructure to support them. Coordinating all these units could incur significant costs and added complexity. The current sentiment in Washington is also not favorable towards imported Chinese components; while the $27 million raised is more than half of the $41 million Revoy has accumulated to date, it remains a small amount compared to the total costs involved in developing a replacement and scaling up domestic production. Furthermore, all-electric semis are set to receive support in their main market from a California rebate program, which could undermine the financial viability of Revoy’s hybrid system.
