Ford's latest electric truck is named 'Fathom' and its starting price is $29,945.

      Ford has generated more excitement for its forthcoming electric truck than for any other model in recent memory. This buzz isn't solely due to the anticipation for battery-powered pickups; rather, the automaker believes it is onto a significant advancement in the manufacturing process. It's been compared to a "Model T moment," with the innovative assembly method significantly reducing the EV's price. Now we know the truck's name and its expected cost: The Ford Fathom is set to debut at $29,945 after destination fees.

      At least, that’s the intention. Given the numerous variables involved in vehicle production, predicting the cost of a model set to launch over a year from now, especially an electric vehicle, is somewhat precarious. We've seen starting prices for the F-150 Lightning fluctuate dramatically even month-to-month. However, Ford seems to grasp that this situation needs to be handled differently.

      You know what else is unique? The name itself. For those hoping for "Ranchero," I apologize. Ford has stated it considered that name as a nod to its original American utility vehicle, alongside a few other classic nameplates such as Galaxie and Taurus. The decision to name the truck “Fathom” is meaningful, as the word has evolved to encompass several definitions.

      It can refer to “measuring depth; to sound” or “to penetrate and understand,” with its origins linked to the span of one's outstretched arms. “Sailors adopted that span to gauge water depths they couldn’t see,” Ford explains. “Eventually, the term evolved to signify complete understanding. A name about measuring the unseen that transformed into a concept of comprehension. For a truck developed through years of understanding a particular customer, that sums up its essence in six letters.”

      In any case, every non-Ranchero model will feature the hardware needed for Ford’s BlueCruise hands-free driving assistance, along with bi-directional charging and more passenger space than a Toyota RAV4, all while including a bed and a front trunk (frunk). In the images we've seen, it appears quite small, though Ford categorizes it as “midsize.” The Maverick isn’t even referred to that way; it’s typically labeled as a “compact truck.” I’m curious to see if this midsize label holds any validity.

      There is still much to uncover about the new Ford Fathom, but it’s known that pre-orders will begin in early 2027. This model will be manufactured at the company’s Louisville Assembly Plant using the advanced Ford Universal EV Production System, which is expected to allow teams to produce Fathoms 40% faster than other models currently being built there. A lot hinges on the success of this vehicle, and I share the curiosity with many others regarding how it will all unfold; undoubtedly, the entire industry will be watching closely.
