Iconic Mazda 767B Prototype Catches Fire in Laguna Seca Paddock

      A Mazda 767B was caught in a serious fire at Laguna Seca this weekend, as shown in a video posted on Instagram by Per.0.xide. The footage depicts car No. 203 stationed under a tent while a team hurriedly approaches with fire extinguishers.

      UPDATE: 8/10 2:00 pm ET: An earlier version of this article mistakenly identified the car involved in the fire as No. 202. We have now updated it with the correct information that it is No. 203 and not a part of Mazda’s Heritage Collection. Additionally, it has been confirmed that this car will not participate in the track activities for the week.

      The cause of the fire remains uncertain, but it seems the car had been driven on the track earlier that day, which suggests it could be linked to an oil or gas leak combined with extreme heat beneath the engine cover. This particular vehicle is part of the Ghost Riders Squad and is frequently seen on tracks nationwide, indicating that it is not merely a showpiece. The Drive contacted Mazda for further details, and a representative mentioned they are investigating and will provide a statement in due course. The team, however, shared the following:

      “During yesterday’s Monterey Motorsports Pre-Reunion event, Mazda 767B #203 experienced a paddock fire. Most importantly, everyone is safe – for that, we are immensely grateful. The car is significant to each member of our team and to history. It will not participate in the remaining Reunion events, but its story isn't finished. #203 will be restored and will race again.”

      The Mazda 767B and its more renowned counterpart, the Le Mans-winning 787B, are legendary not only for their racing legacy and vibrant designs but also for the incredible, high-pitched sound generated by their 13J and R26B Wankel rotary engines, which can rev up to 9,000 rpm. Both cars will be present this week at the Rolex Motorsports Reunion in Laguna Seca, but unfortunately, car 203 will not be involved in any further activities this week. The statement did not specify the full extent of the fire damage, but it is clear that it is significant.

      While the video cuts off before the fire is fully extinguished, some viewers claim that it was quickly brought under control and that the car was not entirely destroyed.
