In a time when the gaming news seems bleak, I’m incredibly thankful for the dedicated team at Hamster. For years, they have been bringing classic arcade games, some of which never made it to home consoles, to modern platforms, and in 2025, they celebrated a significant achievement by releasing the original arcade version of Ridge Racer. Following that, we were treated to Rave Racer and Ace Driver, both of which never appeared on consoles, and now we can look forward to experiencing one of Namco’s motorcycle racing games from that era, Cyber Cycles, right in our own homes.

I must confess that I’ve never played Cyber Cycles before. It’s not a title I remember seeing frequently in arcades, and it’s particularly hard to find today. Given that it features a motorcycle that players actually sit on and lean, it likely poses more challenges for maintenance and upkeep compared to a Ridge Racer or Daytona cabinet. However, similar to Rave Racer, it was never made available on consoles, which makes its revival by Arcade Archives particularly noteworthy.

Cyber Cycles is a futuristic motorcycle racing game that initially presents three distinct bikes and two tracks. Each bike has unique handling characteristics: The Wild Hog is a cruiser that drifts around corners, the NVR750R is a contemporary superbike that leans and grips more traditionally, and the Anthias is a futuristic model that emphasizes handling over top speed.

There are also secret bikes associated with specific unlock conditions, but thankfully, Hamster usually provides clear instructions for accessing hidden features in these AA releases. One of these hidden bikes is reportedly a penguin on a scooter, which might just make this the greatest racing game ever.

The two tracks are quite different from one another. Green Hill is a short, closed loop reminiscent of the eastern section of Suzuka, featuring gradually tightening turns and a wide first corner. On the other hand, Neo Yokohama is much longer and more intricate, set in a city with imposing skyscrapers under the night sky, evoking a Blade Runner aesthetic.

This release includes four-player split-screen mode, but sadly, network multiplayer is not available. Hamster, Bandai Namco

Will the average person be interested in a 31-year-old arcade racing game with a few bikes and only two tracks being accessible on modern hardware? Likely not, but for fans of this pioneering era of 3D polygonal arcade racing games, the home release of Cyber Cycles marks a significant milestone. Rave Racer was already a big deal, and personally, I’m hoping for Hamster to bring Dirt Dash next. It combines elements of Ridge Racer and Sega Rally on a massive, multi-terrain course with various starting points and diverse vehicle types—and like the game we discuss today, it also never received the PlayStation port it truly deserved.
