Lando Norris: This season I wasn't thinking about fighting for the title.
Lando Norris arrived in Zandvoort as the winner of the last race in Hungary. That result gave the McLaren driver the confidence with which he starts the second half of the season. At the same time, the reigning world champion admitted at the FIA press conference that he is not thinking about the title fight this season.
Lando Norris: "For me and the whole team, the victory in Hungary gave us confidence. But I never look too far ahead, so I have no thoughts that we must win again in Zandvoort. At the same time, our goals remain high, and we want to believe that we can fight for victory.
We brought a new floor for the car and other updates to Budapest, but now it’s important to understand how universal these innovations are. Has the car really become faster on different tracks, on different types of asphalt, and in different types of corners, or did the Hungaroring just suit our car well?
The team still needs to figure out how big of a step forward we have made. In any case, it’s clear that we have improved, and that’s a good sign. Therefore, we expect to be competitive on this track.
Zandvoort is somewhat similar to the Hungarian track, but there are serious differences. The wind has a greater influence here, the weather conditions are different, and of course, it’s much cooler. So first we need to see how the car will perform here.
After Hungary, we understand the strengths and weaknesses of the car much better. On Sunday, we demonstrated probably the best speed in a while, and that shows that the car is capable of being very fast, although we still lack stability.
The team continues to analyze the car to better understand its characteristics. I have always liked the Dutch track, and in the past, we have performed well here. I hope it will be the same this weekend.
Title fight? To be honest, I only think about it when I’m asked. I haven’t thought about the title this season at all, especially after the first races.
Right now, it just doesn’t make sense to keep it in mind all the time. I didn’t think about it in Hungary either, and everything turned out well, so I will continue to act in the same way."
When Norris was asked to comment on Max Verstappen's decision to extend his contract with Red Bull Racing instead of moving to McLaren, although that option was theoretically possible, Lando replied: "I knew about it no more than you did. I’m always happy with any teammate.
Of course, it would be great if one day my teammate was such a talented driver as Max, who has won so many titles. However, I know that Oscar will remain my teammate for a long time, so nothing changes."
